In 1996 Public Enemy, a crack team of US Rappers, dropped a package of acapellas on the fledgling interweb and waited for the results. The result was the first commercially available Mash-Up ever released on a 7" vinyl record. This record was called "The Whipped Cream Mixes". US art-rockers The Evolution Control Committee had spread Chuck D and Flava Flav's aggressive rap acapellas across a few slices of classic 1960's instrumental easy listening tunes from Herb Alpert and his Tijuana Brass. Like spreading soft butter on hot toast. In so doing, an entirely new genre of music was created. The "Mash-Up". It's origins were certainly based within Hip-Hop's use of sampling and borrowed beats, but the new Mash-Up genre was only achievable in the age of PC's, music software, Audacity, Soundforge and cut 'n' paste. 
Over a few Tuesday lunchtime sessions the Biggar High Music Tech Group attempted to re-create those first Mash-Ups from the original sources. It was vitally important to go back to use the original sources in order to understand what had to be physically done to mash the two parts together, It could then be understood why a nice clean acapella was necessary. This achieved, we could then attempt to balance the sounds from the two separate pieces of music - recorded decades apart - which belonged to completely different musical traditions. 
This is a Mash-Up of "The Rebel" (1987) by Public Enemy and "Bittersweet Samba" (1965) by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. It is very close to The Evolution Control Committee's ground-breaking "Whipped Cream Mixes", but it is entirely created by Biggar High Music Tech Club. This mix is Nathan's excellent rendition - a great mix and balance of these two very different component parts.
