PIPER - THE BACKSTORY

The year was 1970. The Beatles were breaking up and In-A-Gada-Da-Vida was the next big thing. In the city of Louisville, Kentucky, two guys met at the garage of a mutual friend. Both were musicians. Soon, the two were playing music together. At that time, Louisville was a hot bed for live music and many bands found their way to local and regional success. With Charlie Smith on guitar and Mark Sinkhorn on bass, the two would begin a journey that culminates in the music you’re now hearing.

The two often found themselves spending hours together listening to their favorite music and dreaming of what might be. More importantly, they became best friends. Whether together in the same band or as members of other groups, over the next 10 years, Charlie and Mark were successful musicians.

In the early 80’s, Charlie and Mark reunited to form the band Piper with Steve Culberson on keyboards and Mark’s friend, Dennis Cotner, on drums. Piper became one of the hottest acts on the scene - performing at concerts, college events, and nightclubs around the area.

After a good run lasting a couple of years, Piper disbanded as Charlie and Mark moved on to successful careers in business and the professions. Charlie’s career in business took him around the globe - living and working in such places as Geneva, Switzerland and Singapore. Mark stayed closer to home, becoming an engineer and practicing in Louisville, and later in south Florida.

While following their career paths, both remained active as part-time musicians. Also, during that time, the two never lost track of each other and have remained best friends for nearly 50 years.

PIPER - TODAY

Now retired and comfortable, we are dedicated to giving back some of the good fortune with which we have been blessed. Our goal is to serve our communities through music.

We have chosen several charities that are close to our hearts. By following the links on our website, we hope you will consider making a direct contribution to these worthy charitable organizations.

We are offering new music from Piper for download on a pay-as-you-go basis. A portion of the proceeds from those sales also will go to our favorite charities to further the causes we hold dear.

Piper embraces a variety of musical styles and genres - Christian, Rock, Pop, Latin, Country and Instrumental. As something we believe is unusual in this world where perfection is paramount, some songs are first being presented as “Rough Cuts” - works that are in progress. Once completed, the rough tracks will be updated with finished tunes.

In our Live Feed section, you will find tunes recorded at a performance by the original Piper members in 1982. These tracks were recovered from a cassette copy and were lovingly restored in our studio to the level you hear today.

We hope you enjoy our material as much as we have enjoyed creating and sharing it.
