Played over 1,000 nights in European club scene (see list below) and private parties (mainly from 1992 to 2010).  Mostly private parties now.

Preferred genres to play now:  Anything with a groove and soul. House, Deep House, Afro House, Nu Disco, Melodic / Progressive, Indie Dance.  New music and old (less known) classics and, depending on gig, mixed with some Lounge, Funk, Soul, Rare Groove, Disco or Hip Hop.  

I grew up listening to my parents’ R&B, Soul and Funk records and started building my own music collection early on.  This is when you had to search for - and pay for - physical music (let's say an average of EUR 5 for each song you wanted to own and listen to - play).  I still remember the moment I bought my fist record with my own money (Depeche Mode - The Singles 81 to 85) at age 13 or so.  Started out DJing Disco, 80s, Soul / Funk, Rap, Hip Hop, RnB by chance because a friend asked me if I could do music for her 16th birthday party..

The role and visibility of the DJ has certainly changed over the last 2 decades (fueled by social media and many other factors).  Top international (or regional) DJs are the new pop (not rock..) stars earning large amounts of money.    
Many more people are attracted to becoming a DJ (for various reasons). New technology, such as the much debated SYNCH  function BUT ALSO the fact anyone can now easily find and download the any or "top" 10, 100 or 10,000 tracks of any genre for the past 100 years within 24 hours and maybe not even pay a penny for them... 
The main question to me is not whether you can DJ / mix with vinyl or you only use the synch button and a USB.  The question is whether you love music, listen to lots of different kinds of music - have SACRIFICIED ANYTHING in the pursuit of your love of music and FEEL MUSIC (and the pleasure of sharing it with others)...?
