For a job that’s so dependent on aviation, a lot can go wrong for a DJ in the airport. Apart from losing a record bag in transit, one of the biggest fears you can have as a touring artist is finding out your flight’s been cancelled.

This is exactly what happened to Paula Temple on the night of her first appearance with us back in May. When her Saturday evening flight from Glasgow was called off at late notice, the odds of her making it down to London in time were stacked against her. 

The stars aligned when she found out Levon Vincent also needed to make the same journey, and the pair embarked on an ambitious 8-hour car journey to London. When she finally pulled up on Charterhouse Street 10 minutes before her scheduled set time, we were already impressed before she’d spun her first track.

As it turns out, she then delivered one of our favourite club debuts of the year. Taking rein of Room Two in the peak of the night, her selections were equal parts heady and destructive, delivered with a surgical approach that only comes with an absolute grasp of the craft. 

On New Year’s Eve we invite Paula Temple back to Farringdon, and as the year draws to a close we felt it as good a time as any to look back on her transcendental debut at the club. Speaking of the set, Temple told us: “The long journey to the club was rewarded a thousand times over by how well everyone received my set. It made me very happy to be at fabric!”

Hardcore is an important genre for the dance music scene, it has helped shape the scene into what it is today. Hardcore has inspired producers worldwide and hints of it can be heard throughout many other genres. It is carefully engineered to keep the atmosphere loving, warm and intimate whilst keeping the energy levels high with its crushing breaks and 4x4 sections that are sure to make you loose control of your limbs. It’s the perfect balance of lust and aggression.

Not only did it have an impact on the music scene, It also had an impact on society. It brought people together, broke down boundaries and tensions between groups. It also created a surge in creative energy. The creative energy was coming from hardcore raves. From the music, the visuals, the flyers, the graphic branding behind the rave groups, they didn’t have to conform to any design rules. They were free to do what they wanted, this energy was being injected into everyday life.

It is vital that we keep this beautiful genre alive and strong so that It can keep on giving. The ‘Hardcore will never die’ compilation from Corrupt Data is a free download and features 12 tracks from 12 producers. The compilation focuses on both new and old wave hardcore, some links more subtle than others. Its great to see how the genre has evolved, adapted and been interpreted by others. Each track is totally different and represents hardcore in its own way.

The release is a celebration of the genre and hopes to fuel, ignite or re-ignite passion for hardcore.

American producer Dustin Zahn readies the next release on Rekids Special Projects this April with four vigorous cuts entitled ‘Take The Throne’. 

Dustin Zahn has been flying the techno flag for two decades, releasing on labels like Rekids when not helming the Berlin-based Enemy Records, a label which has released music from artists like fellow US techno stalwart Ambivalent, ARTS boss Emmanuel, and Innervisions' producer Yotam Avni. Zahn is also respected for Train Wrecks, his weekly podcast series inviting members of the house and techno community to discuss a wide variety of music and industry related topics and stories. 

The release opens with the thumping kicks and sci-fi melodies of ‘Take The Throne’ before rolling into the dubby tones, infectious claps and rattling white noise of ‘Decorum’. The atmospheric ‘Nameless Midnight’ then follows, packed with echoing synths, tantalising effects and a twisted vocal sample that weaves throughout, arriving at the final track ‘Subtle Flex’ where escalating synths meet syncopated percussion.

Six years ago, Russian-born Marina Rubinstein was a raver living in Tel Aviv with dreams of becoming a DJ. After saving up enough money, she bought a one-way ticket to Berlin, where she quickly worked her way up from playing small rooms to 20 people to playing the world's biggest techno club, Berghain.

Dr. Rubinstein's story is a familiar one, but her love of '90s acid techno and life-affirming rave tunes helped the fledgling DJ to stand out in a city then dominated by darker, more hypnotic sounds. Today, she's a globally respected selector with a joyous, life-affirming style.

This week's FACT mix is a snapshot of Dr. Rubinstein's dreamier side, packed with hazy breakbeat, electro and acid; it rarely climbs above 115BPM, with tracks from Lake Haze, Holger Flinsch and Legowelt amongst the tracks that will have spotters taking notes. It's one for the 7am crew.
