In the classical margam of bharatanatyam, the varnam is the recital’s centerpiece, its longest and most emotionally charged performance. In “Tome of Stars“, the varnam appears as the twenty-nine-poem section “Senescence”. Following the exaltation of Anthesis, the beloved as a celestial goddess, love now descends from the stars into the gravity of human frailty. 

This sonnet laments the unique intimacy once shared between the speaker and his beloved, embodied most poignantly in her smile, and the profound pain of its loss. Through a blend of memory, metaphor, and cosmological imagery, the poem contrasts the radiant power of her presence during their time together with the barren desolation of estrangement that followed. It explores the agony of witnessing something once sacred and intimately directed toward him now given freely to a world that neither reveres nor appreciates it.

Deep scholars’ shafts—we met entombed that day,
Her amethyst shirt, sultry and divine.
She lit the underground, a grinning fey,
Transforming shadowed corners with starshine.

Resplendent photo, treasured and embraced,
She blessed the garden; fertile flowers formed.
Her beam, the bloom that granted day its grace—
Creative glance, a galaxy newborn.

And now she gleams for all the world’s blind eyes:
In shops, on streets, her sun each stranger’s gains.
And I, her light in vain would memorize—
A goddess ghost whose visage ever wanes.

Unseeing swarms, a star you’re blessed to see,
Ne’er blinding more as when it shone for me.
