Paris is the capital of the French Republic, the chief town of the Île-de-France region, and a global city. With approximately 2.11 million inhabitants, Paris is the fourth-largest city in the European Union (EU). The greater Paris area, with over 12.5 million inhabitants, is the largest metropolitan region in the EU.

With a comparatively small urban area of ​​105.40 square kilometers, Paris is the most densely populated city in Europe, with 20,054 inhabitants per square kilometer. The contiguous urban settlement area (Unité urbaine de Paris) covers 2,845 square kilometers and thus extends far beyond the political borders of the city of Paris. In 2015, the Unité urbaine de Paris had 10,706,072 inhabitants, corresponding to a population density of 3,763 inhabitants per square kilometer, making Paris a megacities. Paris is the political, economic, and cultural center of centrally organized France and, with four airports and six railway terminals, its largest transportation hub. Parts of the Seine river are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is the seat of UNESCO, as well as the OECD and the ICC. Landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Louvre make the city a popular tourist destination. With around 16 million foreign tourists per year, the city is one of the most visited cities in the world.

Present-day Paris developed from the Celtic settlement of "Lutetia" on the Île de la Cité in the 3rd century BC. Later, the Romans built a city on the Seine, which initially became the principal residence of the Frankish Empire in the 6th century. Paris experienced a golden age of art and culture in the 16th century under Francis I. During absolutism, particularly under Louis XIV in the 17th century, the city was enriched with numerous Baroque buildings and boulevards, making it an exemplary model of Baroque urban planning. Although the royal residence was relocated to Versailles in 1682, Paris remained the country's political and economic center due to its importance. With the French Revolution in 1789, Paris assumed world-historical significance. Industrialization led to enormous population growth in the 19th century, so that in 1846 the city exceeded the one million mark for the first time. In the following decades, the city received worldwide attention through the so-called Belle Époque and six World Exhibitions.
