Summoning - Friendly party series, formed 4 years ago near Tbilisi. yet is a slippery word in English. Amorphous, these three letters in different contexts can define contrast or emphasis, set a place in time, show an expectation that something will occur or, paradoxically, that it is likely to stop. 

It is this mercurial nature that makes yet the perfect title for Tresor's latest compilation: the label follows on from the more explorative sections of 2021's landmark Tresor 30 boxed set with a compilation, featuring 13 artists making music that resists easy definition. 

Every track hints at and borrows from the familiar yet none follow the expected path: halfway through Deserto, Nandele &amp; A-Tweed dramatically reveal a very different sonic landscape that was initially suggested; DJ Sotofett collaborates with Sri Lankan artist Kavadi with results that are unlike anything in the Norwegian producer's catalogue as yet. 

Further invention can be found as Jean Redondo's Hypersonic moves across spaces inhabited by digital hardcore and hyperpop before swerving off-road and into a futuristic hip-hop section; on No Longer Human, Ireen Amnes takes a different path at the crossroads melding hyperpop, trance, and sci-fi soundtrack atmospherics, Significant Other heads towards UK Bass and Dubstep, and France's Willis Anne skims by the outskirts of footwork with a piece that is almost completely uncategorisable.

Yet more sonic experimentation comes from E-Saggila, Nadia Struiwigh, NVST, Solid Blake, and Viikatory who offer unique takes on the well-established electro blueprint, while Ryan James Ford, and Nit. both find ways to blend elements normally found in ambient pieces with those heard on a dancefloor.

The feel of the compilation is yet again reflected in the enigmatic artwork by Malik Arbab, where shapes and colours suggest animals and plants but in a world that appears to be transient and constantly evolving.

The Exaltics - The Seventh Planet (CWCS022LP)

For its fifth episode, the last of the year, the rising & shining British label Sound Du Jour welcomes skilled producer Robert Woodward aka Demetae and his exciting three-track “Space-Time Sleaze” EP. Pleasantly troubled by his many influences, the promising Manchester-based artist has a sonority that spams throughout many spectres of dance-floor-oriented electronic music. From House and Acid to Techno and Electro, his output allows him to flirt successfully with a great deal of genres. His brand-new endeavour, for instance, presents heavy doses of Electro Funk – and it’s simply outstanding!

Premiered here, the title track comes packed with a psychedelic and hypnotic but extremely rocking gait. Vocoded lyrics topping rhythmic breakbeats and percussive elements help to set the retro-infused tone and trigger sweet memories of Afrika Bambaataa and Warp 9. The acid atmosphere delivered by the sequenced synth riffs cannot go unmentioned. Kudos!

“Valley Beyond” is the Suction Records label debut by Heiki, aka Toronto-based, Canadian electronic music veteran, Heiki Sillaste. Heiki first made his mark with Digital Poodle, a cult EBM project that he began in 1988, going on to release several albums, along with a string of addictive, industrial dancefloor anthems, including “Work Terminal” and “Soul Crush,” which each received the reissue/remix treatment via a pair of 12”s on Suction in 2015, and 2017, respectively. 

Like many EBM producers in the ‘90s, Heiki found himself losing interest in that increasingly stagnant scene, and quickly shifted his musical focus towards the emerging techno/rave/ambient scene. Over the years, he’s delved into everything from dub techno, to drum and bass, to ambient drone, but for the past few years he’s been diving deep into hardware analog electro and acid. “Valley Beyond” is the result of nearly a decade perfecting his acid/electro sound, finding Heiki at the top of his game.

Highlighted by 2 rocking vocoder electro anthems, “Valley Beyond” and “Komplexoboxxx,” the 6-track vinyl EP moves seamlessly from sinister electro to funky acid, with melodic analog strings, 808 boom, and 303 squelch as constants, weaving in and out. Rounding out Side A of the EP is “Andermatt” — this plaintive and melancholic slow-jam may seem like the odd man out here, but it’s actually an insight into what to expect on the CD/digital full-length.

For the CD and digital download release, the 6-track vinyl EP is expanded to an 11-track “Valley Beyond” full-length. For those who buy the vinyl, it ships with a digital download card inside, giving you access to all 11 tracks. CD/digital exclusive tracks include a slower acid jam, several melodic ambient tracks and interludes, and a bonus remix of acid standout “Highway 10” from the vinyl.

Premiere: Dawn Razor & ArcheTech - Hg Yui

Southwestern mastermind @volen-valencia returns to Seattle’s @rhizome-seattle with five fresh cuts from his Arizona beat lab on the Validation EP. Queued up for a first listen we have “Pure Energy”, the Bandcamp Digital Exclusive accompanying the vinyl release.

Since his release Rolling with Papers on Mexico’s UFO Series, we’ve been tracking Volen closely here on the other side of the Portal. His productions combine infectious grooves, with an ear-candy-shop of samples, achieving a retro-futuristic sound that’s beyond timeless.

“Pure Energy” is no exception. Beginning with a classic West Coast break, the track is at times both dreamy and funky, with airy pads, acidic stabs, and a collage of samples that glues it all together.

After years of listening to his tracks, it’s a pleasure to share a few words from Volen on his new release over on the Peace Portal website:
