Art, Publics, Politics: Legacies of the Wall of Respect

Damon Locks presents on working in past, present, and future tense.

Damon Locks is a Chicago based visual artist, educator, vocalist/musician. He attended The Art Institute in Chicago where he received his BFA in Fine Arts. Recently, he has been lending his artistic and/or teaching talents to organizations such as Prisons and Neighborhood Arts Projects, Art Reach, and at UIC. He is a recent recipient of the Helen Coburn Meier and Tim Meier Achievement Award in the Arts and the 2016 MAKER Grant.

History in the Present Tense: Damon Locks

Andrew Schachman designs environments, infrastructures and installations. He is Executive Director of two organizations that are experimental spaces for delivering arts and culture within existing metropolitan networks: Floating Museum and Fieldwork Collaborative Projects. Trained as an architect, he designed and managed projects for offices in Chicago and London. His projects have received numerous awards including the Distinguished Building Award from the American Institute of Architects and the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Award for Architectural Excellence in Community Design. Andrew is a Studio Associate Professor, Curator of Design Studios and the Director of General Education in the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology.

Faheem Majeed presents on the subject of the Floating Museum.

Faheem Majeed is an artist, educator, curator, and community facilitator. He blends his unique experience as an artist, non-profit administrator, and curator to create works that focus on the institutional critique and exhibitions that leverage collaboration to engage his immediate, and the broader community, in meaningful dialogue. From 2005-2011 Majeed served as executive director for the South Side Community Art Center. Currently he is co-director of the Floating Museum.

History in the Present Tense: Faheem Majeed

Nicole Marroquin presents on the subject of Historical F(r)ictions. 

Nicole Marroquin is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher, teacher, educator and concerned parent of two Chicago Public School students, whose current research looks at Chicago school uprisings between 1967-74. She has recently been an artist-in-residence with the Propeller Fund at Mana Contemporary, at Watershed, Ragdale, Oxbow, and the Chicago Cultural Center. She was a Joan Mitchell Fellow at the Center for Racial Justice Innovation, and she received the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Women of Excellence Award in 2011 for her work in the community. Her essays are included in the Chicago Social Practice History Series, Revista Contratiempo and AREA Chicago Magazine. Her work is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of Mexican Art. Marroquin exhibits, writes, and presents her work nationally and internationally. She received her MFA from the University of Michigan in 2008 and she is Associate Professor in the Department of Art Education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Andres Hernandez presents on the subject of Historical F(r)ictions.

Andres L. Hernandez is an artist, designer, and educator who works with youth and adults to interpret, critique, and reimagine their physical, social, and cultural environments. He is co-founder of Revival Arts Collective, and founder and director of the Urban Vacancy Research Institute. Hernandez earned a B.Arch from Cornell University and a M.A. in Art Education from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he is Associate Professor in the Department of Art Education.

Abdul Alkalimat received his PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago and held leadership roles SNCC, OBAC, and various organizations in Black Studies and the Black Liberation Movement. He works in eBlack Studies, the application of information technology in the academic field of Black Studies, and has built research websites such as Malcolm X (www.brothermalcolm.net) and eBlack Studies (www.eblackstudies.org). His current project is the History of Black Studies. He is co-author (with Romi Crawford and Rebecca Zorach) of "The Wall of Respect: Public Art and Black Liberation in 1960s Chicago."

Romi Crawford is Associate Professor in the Visual and Critical Studies and Liberal Arts Departments at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She studies formations of racial and gendered identity and their relation to American visual arts, film, and popular culture. Recent projects include "The Wall of Respect; Vestiges, Shards, and the Legacy of Black Power" (Chicago Cultural Center) and "Radical Relations!: Memory, Objects, and the Generation of the Political" (University of Chicago Center for Gender Studies). She is co-author (with Abdul Alkalimat and Rebecca Zorach) of "The Wall of Respect: Public Art and Black Liberation in 1960s Chicago." Crawford founded the Museum of Vernacular Arts, a project-based platform for art forms that are part of everyday experience and was co-curator (with Lisa Lee) of the 2017 Open Engagement Conference, themed "Justice."

Amor Kohli is Associate Professor and Director of African and Black Diaspora Studies at DePaul. He has taught Black literary and cultural studies at DePaul since 2003. His essays have appeared in a variety of journals, including Callaloo, African Identities, and MELUS. More recently, he has been working on the performance and written work of the poet/artist Ted Jonas and Amiri Baraka.

Rebecca Zorach is an art historian, writer, and occasional curator who studies early modern European art, activist art, and art of the 1960s and 1970s, with particular interests in printmaking, gender and sexuality studies, and the visual arts of the Black Arts Movement in Chicago. She is co-author (with Abdul Alkalimat and Romi Crawford) of "The Wall of Respect: Public Art and Black Liberation in 1960s Chicago." She is Mary Jane Crowne Professor in Art and Art History at Northwestern.
