Suzie Q is a tune with quite a long and rather remarkable history. This Classic was covered by many famous artists and bands, before it caught fire again as a breakout Monster Hit for Creedence Clearwater Revival (re-released on their 1968 Debut Album). The CCR version is still a primary frame-of-reference for me, but just re-created my own way with all due respect to the Original songwriter, Dale Hawkins. Hawkins wrote and first recorded it in 1957. Seems there's still a dispute about whether the '57 song was a remake of an earlier Sonny Boy Williams ditty of the same name, released as early as 1939. This song began with Stephen, who recorded it on his acoustic guitar and bass to a programmed drum track a few months ago. We were all thrilled to work on it, even though it sat in BandLab as a project for almost a month before Stephen separated the tracks, thus allowing us to trickle in our parts. JJ was first to jump on it, because he could before the tracks were separated, as his part is completely his idea. He added the organ that really set up the entire sound of both dominant sections of the song. 
  Ken was first up to the project once the tracks were replaceable, making the wild, driving beat his own. Inspired by both JPJ and Michael Ivins, Josh laid down his bass line, trying to match Ken's energy. Last, but not least, Mark jumped in with the rumbling timpani. He also added the flavorful harmonica, and unique jaw harp you hear throughout, as well. 
  At that point, Stephen also got the idea to add the hambone percussion at the very end of the song, which we all consider a treat, and after showing us how it's done, Mark volunteered his percussion skills to give it a go. Stephen wasn't done with it, though, and still had some magic to sprinkle. He went in and added the howling electric guitar you hear prominently in the second main section. Also, he added the tempting intro with his acoustic guitar and electric mandolin that looks like a Telecaster guitar. 
  Once it was in the bag, we thought it appropriate for our master mixer Stephen to put it to bed, which he did in his always expert manner. Mark did help with the production, though, as he's very good with editing and spotting mistakes that need to be corrected.
  This is a gift from Stephen to all of us, and you, too. It took a lot of teamwork to make the dream work, as always for Eclectic Collective. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.

This Could Be It

I wrote this song 15 years ago for close friend and guitarist Elmer Stone. Elmer and I have collaborated on three songs on Soundcloud but this one is purely a tribute to him and the friendship we have shared for the past thirty-plus years.  It is also a memorial for his wife Bonnie who he lost two years ago. She was a core contributor to his music, life partner, and his best friend.
I am indebted to Mike Fox and Axel Meningen for taking my rough demo of the song and making it a broadcast quality production.  Thank you gentlemen for your time, talents, and belief that the song could be more than I could ever make it on my own. What to say about Maximilian?
There are so many things to be told: a lifetime of 24 years, full of special moments, joys, fears, sorrows, worries, hopes, dreams, ups, downs, progress, regress, searching, finding, winning, losing, restlessness, peace...
His life had begun with an extremely difficult birth, almost as if the world didn’t want him. They told us he had a life-threatening infection, there were probably holes in his lungs and he obviously had no kidneys. In total, his chances of surviving were exceedingly slim. However, after endless weeks of both despair and hope, he overcame the infection, the diagnosis of holes in his lungs turned out to be totally wrong and they even discovered a kidney.  Just one maybe but at least it worked perfectly.  His journey into existence had begun.
As he grew, so did the never-ending nightmare of problems, challenges and battles, until we began to wonder what could possibly happen next.  Through it all, Max took every opportunity to accumulate extreme experiences - never hiding, always   seeking.  For that, we loved him even more…and even more it broke our hearts that we couldn’t help him find what he was looking for.
But suddenly, as the Summer of 2011 dawned, his troubles seemed to merely fade away.  Was he just arriving in life, coming of age, finding his place in society?  To be honest, we hadn’t the faintest idea.  But it was abundantly clear that, having always been an underdog, that same unwelcoming world had simply started to like and respect him.  He began to realise his many talents, enjoying his job as never before, finally becoming something he had never been - happy.
Fast forward to the gorgeous Summer evening of June 28th, the eve of a 4-week vacation to which he had been looking forward so very much.  A smile on his face, he said he was in the mood to go jogging, something he loved. Sometimes, he ran and ran for ages.  He’d been gone about 3 hours, quite a long time even for him, so Carina called his phone and he answered, cheerfully telling her not to worry and assuring her he’d be home very soon.  Seconds after the call, out of the blue, he collapsed.  A pulmonary embolism.  They told us he died instantly. 
Max, we have no words for what happened, nor for the eternal gratitude we feel for every single second of your life.  We do know we will never stop loving you.”

Hey everyone!
This track, Asteroids (The Original Was Better), started when I heard Beating Edge’s chiptune tune RND and got inspired to write some lyrics about the classic arcade game Asteroids. I added my acoustic guitar and vocals on top and sent it over to the band.
They liked it so much they decided to jump in and make a second part with a more rock vibe using the same musical base. We put both parts together into one track, starting with a fun spoken intro, a little vocal line to bridge the two sections, and finishing off with a hilarious outro.
It was a really cool collab and I’m stoked for you all to hear it!

Well hello. Here’s some rustic Mountain Blues, played on extremely oxidized guitar strings, with me hollering from the mountain top. Hahahaha. The song hints at a personal authenticity, and the experience of possibly unraveling any prior conditioning (Pavlovian or otherwise) that may constrict our lives in some way. It’s also about the different personas we portray to the outside world. How we may act at work, or on a first date, or with our spouse, or kids, friends, enemies, those who hurt us, even our stage personas comes into play…. So this song is asking a lot of us. In other news, right now in June, the mountains are snow covered and it froze last night. That is late spring, early summer here. Gardenwise, this year, I am planting a lot more Brassicas: Kale, Cabbage and Broccoli, and they are growing well. I am going to try to fence off the carrot/beet beds, as the voles always eat more carrots and beets than I ever do. Onions, leeks and garlic have been growing since March. I transplanted 50 lettuce plants I grew from seed that I saved from last year’s lettuce. The berry bushes and fruit trees have really blossomed this year. There are squash, cukes, tomato and pepper plants inside by the window, to be transplanted outside next week, quite a mess… all of which keeps me busy…. Hahaha. Stephen and I wanted to give it our own flavor though. After I asked him to play banjo on it and produce it for me, we started spitballing ideas about how we could add something more to it. Originally, we both played every instrument, guitar, banjo, mandolin, and piano, through the whole thing, except the first and last verses. Then we decided to trickle the instruments in for maximum effect. I also sang the harmonies throughout. Finally, Stephen came up with the idea to wrap the last verse in a mono effect, giving it a detached feel. He mixed it brilliantly, too.
  This song has always had a special place deep in my heart. Sometimes you hear a song and recognize such truth in it, it feels like it was written about you. This is such a song for me. Plus, it was written by my favorite band, Phish, so it has even more meaning for me. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.

I'm thinking of the mentalists who fascinate me in this tune as well as other things. The idea of neuroplasticity and actually wiring your brain towards a path that offers content feelings by releasing negativity just by intending it or doing the same conversely if that's your frame of mind. There lies Einstein's famous quote, "The most important decision you will make is whether you live in a hostile universe"
We decide how we feel about everything and those decisions are what let them effect our mindset either positively or negatively. I used to look at that quote as having your head in the sand on reality and that maybe thinking like that didn't factor in other people's suffering properly. But I think I get it how he meant it now. No matter what is happening that's not in your control.. You still decide what your mindset is whether it's about a war or a relationship with one other human. They can both profoundly effect you if you let them. But maybe his point is it doesn't matter what the reality is that you are processing, you still chose to manifest it in a positive or negative manner as only you can build your own mindset and only you can control whatever level of connectivity you have with that other human or that war you may be in our not... Both scenarios can suck and be a challenge but the true power is being at peace with what you do control, your own brain...

Derren Browne and Keith Barry are two great mind specialists worth a rabbit hole each.

I don't believe  what they have discovered and teach has to end with enjoying them as entertainment. We can be that if we learn our own versions of what they've found and get that positive for own own beings. It's all about mind set, not magic... It is more control over the universe of neurons we all have inside our skulls. The stuff we can and should learn to control because then we move towards the greater good with common sense

Shout out to Single Use & Recycled. Whilst playing this electric line I'm thinking of them. There is no way I would have tried playing what I tried playing without their direct influence recently. So far I could only dream of expressing on a guitar some of the scaling they can but that highlights for me a few things... Over the decades bands are starting to disappear. Thats an industry driven thing but also a natural bi product of the ability of a band or a huge amount of what a band can do is possible by one person. That sucks for bands but it's very empowering to the individual musician. If you think pre internet, we had hubs of cities and regions where bands were spawned.... SoundCloud is like one big Seattle for me. How I learn everyday from everyones interpretation of music is astounding to me especially given a band was also for me a dream at one point as a boy. In a way even if we aren't directly collaborating it's still like we are all jamming with one another on some level and thats I guess a really positive thing in the light of less actual bands breaking through to mainstream...

I don't think words should ever be taught as bad. Context & frame of reference contain the meaning and intent. Calling words bad and limiting their use is limiting expression in my view. yes we should inspire younger generations to express themselves in more articulate ways but maybe our culture says curses are needed to truly express this reality.

Always loved this tune after hearing  Chet  Atkins brother Jim sing on an old Atkins album.Jim was a jazz guitarist that played with the Les Paul jazz group so he was no slouch on guitar either. Al put thythm and lead on a backing track for this one.
