The "Baumgartner" release marks the third Solo EP by Van Bonn after his „Maserung/Schwerpunkt“ and „Onwards“ 12“ on Telrae in 2012. So it was high time for another solo release with him. His new track is again a timeless classic, gracefully flowing without much of an interruption, it is his most melodic release up until now. The track is nevertheless very much detached in style from what Van Bonn has released solo and together with Stefan Gubatz on Telrae. The track is at ease and at the same time connects to a feeling of melancholy. "Baumgartner" was written by Van Bonn directly after the jump out of the stratosphere by Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner. Marko Fürstenberg wrote the remix on the flip side transforming the original into a tight and bass heavy dub track. Marko breaks with the flow of the original and creates a much more rigorous dance flloor rocker that introduces one element after the other. This is not for the weak and for bass lovers only!

The Cacao crew pay their respects to their favourite classic tunes. While we’re constantly flooded by daily rapid-fire releases, there are some timeless gems that always ignite the dancefloors. The following tracks come from influential artists that have left their mark on the Cacao team’s sound world, blending perfectly into their sets. 
At number one we have Rodriguez Jr. of the mobilee family with his Kids of Hula belter. A playful groove serves as centerpiece, dotted by exotic fauna sounds that reach for the tropics. Alternating percussive pads, the fittingly tribal drums bring the entire melody together, making it a perfect peak-time track.
Dub Taylor’s aptly titled Hidden From the Mind showcases a fully immersive tribal experience. Kicking off with wooden percussive loops that make for an instant earworm, we’re gradually greeted with distorted vocals and an ample groove that blend into the perfect dub tech journey.

The first B-side takes us further into the house jungle, with youANDme’s deep edit of Lawrence & Seth Troxler’s Miles in Aphrika. A stern echoed vocal presents itself as the leitmotif, while the melody progressively unfolds. Metallic pads and subtle synth grabs add to the atmosphere, creating a sense of space and amping up the overall intensity.
Audiofly turn Martin Eyerer and Benno Blome’s Piano Roll into a jazzy house exploration with major dancefloor appeal. Bouncy yet deep, the bassline keeps the body moving, while the {Rhodes} piano chords create the perfect immersive groove. One to heat up the atmosphere at any point during a set!

An artist as versatile as Alex Krüger is a rare find these days, not only did he release numerous EP’s and albums as Tigerskin or Korsakow since the mid 90s, he’s also been on the forefront of the “Dub Techno” movement since 1999 with outings on classic labels such as “Raum...Musik”, “Force Tracks” and “3B/ United States of Mars”. Now ten years after his last album on “Opossum Recordings” Alex is back with this well crafted genre bending full length “Caves & Cages”. From deep techno cuts through rippling ambient excursions to funky reggae infused live jams with Haushausen this work is yet another milestone in the creative bubble Alex lives in (i.e. his studio). 

A predominantly analogue producer, Alex recorded most sounds for “Caves & Cages” on his modular synths and vintage gear at Organic Domain during 2017 and early 2018. Throughout the album tension ebbs and flows effortlessly via syncopated subs, analogue improvisation, subtle chord stabs and sustained swells interspersed with textured field and home recordings. The ambient opener “Intra” sets the tone for the album. Rich with alien atmospheres, distant soundscapes, out of reach voices and licks of live instruments dug up from numerous recordings dating back as far as 30 years, even before Alex started his electronic journey. The sojourn ventures deeper from there. Subaquatic dub techno is the mood on “Kings Cave”, “Helix” and “In Air” only surfacing ever so slightly for moments of clarity where shimmering tops and glistening synth lines shed some light on the steady grooves. The tracks “Future History” and “Transition State CIV” border on deep house territory. A punchy, gruff bass line and shaken percussion on the first adds suspense and energy, while the second quivers slowly with jungle tainted toms and blips and squelches from machines. 

Laid back dub reggae is the tempo for “Last First Time” as well as “Ghost Button” and “R.U.G” where Alex is joined by his Berlin studio neighbours Haushausen. Seasoned musicians in their own right they jammed with him on these two tracks, delivering deft performances on drums, bass and guitar and adding yet another, more human dimension to the unfolding release. The feeling peaks becoming almost aerial on “Nervana” and “Self-Similarity”, where quicker tempos, glitchy modular patterns dart along while seemingly eternal reverb tails and strings transcend space and time. 

Dub Taylor returns with an all consuming, otherworldly listening experience. “Caves & Cages” is an inter-dimensional hour of sound from the mind of Alex Krüger.

While most people in the Dub Techno world seem to be more concerned with creating the aural equivalent of Jupiter in your front room, Lucidflow like to show that they have a solid bedrock once you puff away all the dense layers of gas and cloud.
Rather than purely being like the ominous and oppressive gas giant, From Dub Till Lucid Dawn is more like being firmly planted on a beach facing the ocean, watching the waves move like a graphic equaliser in front of you as the dark night sky gradually colours with the sunrise.
As you can tell, Dub Techno can be perceived as a two dimensional beast at times. Lucidflow have taken great steps to show that there are many nuances in what is one of the more mysterious of electronic genres.
Helly Larson & Riccicomoto slink out a Jazz flecked groove with Bronco Del Noche, gently caressing you up high with the lightest keys while the bass warms your core.
Nadja Lind, Lucidflow co-owner and the expert hands behind the two DJ mixes included with the compilation, appears in many forms over the compilation, but in particularly spectacular fashion with the little box of magic crafted out of Universal Language’s Dub Sessions 1. Happily pitching around the octaves with little care, it toys with your sanity in the most delightful way.
Keeping with the subtle touch, Dub Taylor breaks through the usual Dub atmosphere with muted 909 hats. Crisp enough to widen the eyes, yet never letting you snap out of a hypnotic trance.
Keeping you in this state is key, something Rene Breitbarth demonstrates on the remix of Siz Da’s Staub der Zeit. Held notes build a sense of tension and little “HEY!” shouts push you on into a state where you will be begging for release.
Dub Techno veteran Fluxion is represented with a superb remix of Zentex’s Tahu, a gentle cosmic communication of cosmic blips and textures that hug you around the ears.
For those who want those little gear shifting moments that raise the pulse, the full fat sub bass kick of Marko Fürstenberg’s Without You takes one step towards this goal. Continuing to put one foot in front of the other, Tech House mainstay G-Man bangs synths together with Nadja Lind on the harmonic churn of CatNap. Taking you up to the full gallop is Nico Purman’s Cuidad De Nubes, a Progressive flecked touch tugging at the heartstrings.
Possibly one of the most commanding entries in the compilation is Trentemoller’s remix of DJosos Krost’s Chapter One. The most intriguing soundclash of Acid and Dub, Jah Bobby’s vocal ringing out over the top.
No Lucidflow compilation would be complete without a Klartraum entry and there are a few to take a pick from; the toe to toe battle between Deep House and Dub that scraps it out on the Einklang Freier Frequenzen remix of Expect Me, or the huge doomy chords that gradually let the smallest chink of light through on Hatikvah’s remix of Shakes. And talking of Shakes, Nadja’s Klartraum partner Helmut Ebritsch gets his shake on with a muted aquatic re-rub of her track Hummingbird.
Last, and by no means least, some authentic downtempo Dub is represented with H-Foundation’s Slayin’ The Dragon, spicing it up somewhat with the sleaziest Jazz mood.
From Dub Till Lucid Dawn is a compelling case to take a little holiday on Lucidflow’s beach, with a tour of everything deep and dubby.
