This song started as a project that was begun on his guitar and synth, then shelved by our master songwriter, Chris. He always gives us magic to work with, and as soon as he shared this one with the rest of Eclectic Collective, we all jumped on it.
Mark was immediately inspired by Chris' music demo, and set about writing some timely lyrics to sing with his solid, inimitable voice. The lyrics are about a hypothetical future where we've turned to technology in search of human connection, only to realize that it has only isolated us more, and that we really already had that connection to begin with. (The narration is from a future perspective, like all this has already happened, and its speaking to us from the future, almost like a warning.)
The rhythm section was still absent, though, but not for long. Ken added his groovy, perfectly in the vibe drums to it next. Josh, of course followed soon after, now that he had drums to work with, by adding his fretless four string bass to the song. Now that it was sounding like a well rounded piece, Tez came through with the thrilling guitar solos that you hear in the middle. JJ first added some piano, B3, and sax to the song, then later completed it with his psychedelic synth and divine voice synth that provides the "choir" you hear in there.
Now that it was all in the bag, Mark spent considerable time and effort mixing it, then turned it over to our resident pro Stephen for the mastering.
This is one of our favourite songs we've ever done, and it reminiscent of both Pink Floyd and King Crimson. It's a great example of what the team is able to do with a really solid, yet open musical seed, provided by a master composer. We hope you enjoy listening to it as much as we enjoyed making it.

Faded Fortunes (Eclectic Collective)

When Im out walking in the countryside I often look up & see The Common Buzzard that as made an astonishing come back.
The "comeback" of the common buzzard refers to its successful recovery as the most common bird of prey in the UK, after being persecuted by gamekeepers and declining due to pesticide use in the mid-20th century. Legal protection and a reduction in pesticides have allowed populations to rebound, and they are now found almost everywhere in the country. This recovery is considered a major conservation success story. 
So back to the idea of the song which was recorded June 2024.
Crows pursue common buzzards a behavior called mobbing to defend their territory. By harassing the buzzard, the crows try to drive it away from their nest site, which is a common defense mechanism for many birds. 
I can never understand why the powerful buzzard just doesn’t turn and take the crow out with it’s incredible sharp talons. 
The idea I have linked to dating and trying to free yourself from the worst  brief two dates of your life yet she still persists in pursuing the third one.
Chasing you down just like the Crow with the Buzzard.
Hope this makes sense as my imagination always tries to think outside the box with lyrics.

We really haven't done very well with what we were gifted. 
 
Have we?

In any sense, under any interpretation, through any lens, via any belief system, under any political prism, upon any philosophical foundation, we have utterly corrupted the entirety of the social, cultural, spiritual, environmental and biological ecosystem that we touch, and which defines and sustains what we understand as "life" on our home planet.

And on every front, by all metrics, under any assessment - empirical, analytical, theoretical, logical, it gets progressively worse.

Every day.

When children' hearts bear tender fear from the very instance of their birth

When the simplest of kindnesses stands blatantly denied
When respect for fellow mortal lands gutter-bound, cast aside
When the spyglass is inverted to inspect what’s deep inside
When the court of civil fortitude finds us guilty as described

When the very least of all is but the best that can be done 
When portends toss and nightmares turn, and grace is on the run

Unfortunately, the connection has dropped, and we cannot be sure what is happening in the apartment where, at such a late hour, the light is still on. Probably nothing; they’re likely watching a film or reading a book. They might be projecting their reactions outward, and what we see could therefore be nothing more than the reflection of someone else’s nightmares — or dreams. Certainly, we have now reached a turning point: nothing can any longer be regarded as real, or the opposite... (all talk!).

This is the fifth in a series of eight easy, acoustic, rather short, and deliberately inconclusive tracks, assembled by combining new ideas with reworked older material, adding parts and sounds along the way.

In case nothing happens - part 5 (night again)

Peter and Seagull reflect on what could happen, but has not happened yet, and I pray never happens if humanity ceases to be human.  The headlines would tell us we are near the brink, but daily life and interactions with everyday people tell a different story.  Hope abounds when helping hands are present, there is plenty to go around when the plenty is shared, and forgiveness can heal the deepest wounds.  None of it is easy and there are no easy answers and great effort may be required, but infinitely preferable to the despair depicted in Peter's sobering lyric poetry.  The bottom line for me is; keep the faith, with God and with each other.
