Biography of a Poet

The founder and creator of EMCEE Magazine Online. A Oakland, CA native Clidell “Franceyez” Jackson has been improving his craft of music & art, practically all of his life. At  age  3 he was the lead alto/tenor in his school & church choir. Jackson started writing his own songs at the tender age of 7. 

This lyrical genius then took his understanding of music to a more theoretical form when he bought his 1st beat machine in 1995.  Working on various projects with artists such as Richie Rich, The Luniz & Dru Down among others, Yet he did not find his true identity until he came across the name that he would be known on stages across the world for.

During the 2001 Hot August Nights Tour in Reno, Ca. At age 15 Jackson was asked to provide vocal coaching as well as song-writing to an up and coming label in Sacramento, Ca. At the time Jackson was performing with artists from Mean Mugg Records. “They said ‘We think you’re a one man franchise, what do you think your name should be?” as far as a rap name. ‘Well, Franceyez.” Jackson stated.

Jackson’s creative spelling of the name Franceyez, much like his experience as a rapper, is all but typical. As an artist he has toured throughout the United States and Canada. He has worked as rapper, producer or both with Bay Area artists such as MC Hammer, Lenny Williams, Mr. Fab, Mac Mall, Conscious Daughters and San Quinn. He has also had a chance to work with the Black Eyed Peas and Afeni Shakur among others.
Though he has worked with Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Pharrell and Common on various projects, he hopes to work with them musically on his upcoming debut. Other artists he hopes to work with include producing tandem Cool and Dre, producer extraordinaire Timbaland, and hip hop icon Lil Wayne.

Jackson’s creative enthusiasm has brought him to work with such groups as Turf Unity, a group of over 200 youth throughout the Bay Area that have worked on a “Silence the Violence” campaign in collaboration with the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights in Oakland. Their efforts helped to make June 18th Silence the Violence Day on the national spectrum.

“(Turf Unity) started out as 30 artists, low income, underserved youth and we came together to promote peace,” said Jackson.

Jackson’s musical influence has been inspired by George Clinton, Tupac, Jimmy Hendrix, Quincy Jones, Carlos Santana, and “a little bit of Lil Wayne,” he said. He looks to create music that inspires under a genre he created called Street Heat.
“It’s highly inspirational,” he said. “You know, everything has to be inspirational. I want to inspire others to be better today than they were each day before.”

Jackson does just about everything you can think of that relates to the music business, including A&R, mastering, design and social networking for himself and other artists. He is currently working on his own magazine, clothing line and film production company, as well. Still yet, the artist who said he has been mentored to primarily from his peers & studying and learning from his father, also takes the time to mentor young artists on the ends and outs of the music business. For Jackson, it always comes back to being an inspiration wherever he can.

Today Jackson is a full time father of a wonderful son Amani Jackson born July 14, 2010.

In Khafre James’s mind, hip-hop and politics are synonymous – there could not be one without the other.  On top of that, he happens to have an appreciation for nature, knowledge and symbolism.
 
“A lyricist cares about the ways words sound together,” he explains when defining what a lyricist is.  “It’s all about the syncopation of your syllables and using those syllables like drums.”
 
Khafre grew up in the Bayview - Hunter’s Point District of San Francisco, California.  He says that although there was a heightened level of violence in the area the sense of community was strong.  His father was a patron of the arts and was known for being an actor.  Khafre says he was introduced to the stage and performances through acting.  Khafre and performed in musicals like, “God Don’t Like Ugly” at the Paramount Theatres in Oakland, California.
 
He was introduced to the rap game when he met his friend Nore who would freestyle with him all the time.  But he really got into rapping when he was kicked out of his school and had to transfer to School of the Arts.  He met Richie Cunning, another Bay Area Rapper and they formed a rap duo called Fully Funktional.  They made a name for themselves rocking shows around the Bay Area but broke up when Richie Cunning went to college.  In 2008, Khafre linked up with BPos, which is the jazz and funk hip hop group that he is currently working with consisting of Goodword, D-Wiz and DJ Johnny Venetti.
 
“D-Wiz is the computer genius, he brings the mixing and mastering skills, Venetti is the DJ so he brings everything together, Goodword is the business savvy type and I bring the party,” says Khafre when describing his group.
 
Khafre sings just as good as he raps and D-Wiz’s intelligent beats make you feel like you’re literally getting smarter.  If there is a such thing as conscious hip hop this would be it.  “Dope” is a music video that will forever be a San Francisco city life staple with digitized graphics of a historical building in the SOMA district with furniture hanging out the windows and stuck to the walls.  Another music video that BPOS recently released shows BPOS in comic book form.
 
Having performed in over 38 states and sharing stages with the likes of Method Man, Hieroglyphics and Casual, Khafre is all action.
 
“I want to be heard by as many people as possible,” he says with an enormous ambition to succeed.  He enjoys being in life’s fast lane, energetic and focused with an “I’ll show them” attitude.
 
At first glance you might think that Khafre is a rasta man with dreadlocks hanging down his back which he has proudly grown for 12 years.  Although Khafre is not a rastafari he does rap over a reggae inspired beat to his song called “The Place Where I Live” describing the ups and downs of his neighborhood, Hunters Point and San Francisco city life.  

Khafre has always worked with troubled youth, which he says he indentifies more with.  He helped save a kid who tried to jump from a second story window.  He wants kids to have a positive outlet or as he says, “something they can skate with.”   
 
Khafre’s next solo project is putting together an album that addresses political themes such as racism, gentrification, homelessness and sexism.  He has worked closely with Van Jones, founder of Green for All and the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, in the past and was the writer of the GreenPeace theme song in 2009 saying, “We should always give back to ‘Mama Nature’.”  He is currently working at Green Peace as the San Francisco Frontline City Coordinator.
 
Khafre has recently released an album titled “Time for Action” where he addresses socioeconomic conditions of the Bay Area and beyond.  A song that stands out is called “We All Owe God A Death” which is dedicated to his boss that committed suicide. 

“I got out all my thoughts about my mortality on that song,” Khafre said. “You gotta believe in what you’re talking about.”

Pastor Larry Austin is a true Bay Area cat! He was born in San Francisco, but raised in Oakland (Elementary School & Middle School) and Richmond (Middle School & High School). He is married to his high school sweetheart, Michelle and is the father to 3 beautiful daughters: Amani, Brandy and Faith. He says being surrounded by 4 beautiful ladies continues to teach him what it means to love the bride of Christ, the Church.

He received a football scholarship to play football at Portland State in 1993-94 and while pursuing a pro football career, God called him to trust and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He truly feels called to the city of Oakland, in which he has worked tirelessly in through various non-profits and service agencies for the past 15 years. He is aware of and driven by the reality that Oakland, while being an amazingly diverse and culturally rich city has also been continually challenged by despair, injustice, confusion and hopelessness. And he says this I why he feels that this is what makes it fertile ground for the Gospel (the Good News) of Jesus Christ. His desire is to see Christ exalt himself in the city of Oakland through the life, love and language of a people who give themselves to bear witness to the beauty of the Gospel for the Peace of the City.

He is currently in the midst of planting a new worshiping community in West Oakland under the banner of ‪#‎ElevateGospelChurch‬ and just released a New Gospel Rap CD entitled, “The Purpose Project...” on September 2015.

Mak Erv is a Northern California artist, born in Sacramento and raised in Oakland he found his passion for music at a young age. Grew up listening to artists from every region in the country would soon turn into an MC himself developing his own style of rap which he now calls his own genre (Nighttime Music). He's been featured on several collaborations with other artist such as Keak Da Sneak, Turf Talk, Pigg Penn, Ae Dee, Sumthin Terrible, Marc Garvey,  and would eventually form his own group M.O.E. Gang with his long time friends Bandit, Play J and Duda.

Artist Bio
Born December 5, 1984, Tatiana Ferrei, also known as Pryceless, is a female rap artist from South America: Lima, Peru. Growing up in a different country was not easy and offered a limited opportunity. Pryceless and her family moved to the United States, where she learned how to speak English, when she was a child. Despite the distant move, far away from her native land, she managed to adapt to the American lifestyle very quickly.

Arriving to the Bay Area, California, she combined her Latin style with the urban style. As a teenager, she found herself living in Broward County, Florida, soaking up a more southern style. At 18, she moved back to the bay area, where she made a name for herself in Oakland, California. Her peers named her “Pryceless.” As an artist with no manger, Pryceless took initiative to start attending “Open Mic Nights” around the bay area, and networked to make sure she was known and respected locally. She also involved herself with “Beauty of The Bay,” a modeling group, where she attended a few different runway shows as a model, such as: The B.A.R.S. (Bay Area Rap Scene) Awards. A month later, she started getting calls to come perform at many different venues and events. One such as her most memorable performance at San Quentin Prison, where she and other acts performed for inmates doing 1 year to life. It was for a good cause. She also performed at Candle Stick Park for the Street Low Magazine Car Show, where thousands of people attended. Pryceless was also the opening act for known rap artist of Bone Thugs & Harmony, Lazy Bone.

Pryceless had started featuring on local rap artist albums around the bay area. Soon enough Michael Sebastian met Pryceless at an industry party in San Jose, California. He immediately took interest in her music and offered her to be featured on the “Too Short, I Love the Bay Compilation,” which ended up coming out in December of 2007. She was also a member of the duo group VVS Diamonds, with WyldChyld, but is now focusing more on her solo career. 

Currently, Pryceless is still performing locally, in the southern and eastern states, and working hard to be the best at what she does. Her latest single “Cadillac Car Keys” is quickly becoming a favorite hit among the high school and college aged crowds. She says, “There is something new to learn every day.” With her incomparable style and erotic flirtatious look, she pushes to the limit to over exceed what is expected of her. She states of her music in her final words, “I have no choice but to make it and share my art with the world.”

Miguel Villegas Ventura, also known as Una Isu, was born in San Miguel Cuevas, Juxtlahuaca, Oaxaca, Mexico. He was raised part of his life in San Miguel Cuevas and migrated to Fresno, California, when he was 7 years old. Internationally he is known for his innovative trilingual rap music combining his native language Mixteco, Spanish and English that covers topics such as Indigenous languages and his lived experience as an Indigenous (Mixteco) migrant. His internationally recognized song “Mixteco es un lenguaje” made a huge impact within the Indigenous language movement, demanding the recognition of Indigenous languages as formal languages rather than just dialects. Una Isu advocates for the preservation of  Indigenous native languages through his music, workshops, and activism.  Scholars, such as Dr. Lynn Stephen from the University of Oregon and Dr. Gaspar Rivera Salgado from UCLA Labor Center cites Una Isu’s songs to understand issues on the history of U.S. immigration, Indigenous farmworker movements, and Indigenous cultures and traditions.
