Was really happy to be invited to contribute to Aberdeen's new evening of experimental sound, Easterly Archive, run by @lamium. This was the set I played as part of a busy night of sound experiments and performances. Novy Mir-27, a longer and more varied danceable mix, will be out for degree show in Aberdeen on 9 June. In the meantime fall into a dwam with this.

This set has a strong Ukrainian spine featuring music by John Object, currently serving in the Ukrainian army, Mykola Lebed's beautiful piano sampling, and the legendary creative mind of @Koloah to finish things off. This material underpins some tracks by Novy Mir favourites Kevin Richard Martin, Oto Hiax and Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development.

Novy Mir-26 Live Set - EasterlyArchive

Probably this is the end of the line for Novy Mir so let’s hit the buffers with a big bang and a cloud of smoke. 

We start with John Object playing a tuneless piano in an empty house in Ukraine, in between fighting on the front line; other softer Ukrainian notes start with Mykola Lebed and later we end up in a Kyiv tram in the company of Heinali. This work is interspersed with English electronic lyricism and melancholy featuring the British Stereo Collective and the astonishing Craven Faults, who has produced one of the albums of the year, an intense meditation on abandoned Yorkshire agricultural landscapes.

Later on old favourites such as Georgia’s Kancheli and Belarus’ Postdynamic feature alongside bright new stars from Germany (Estella Boersma) and France (Emmanuel Top). And what better way to see us out, lighters aloft, with some (very) old school doink and house, and the wise observation from Bodya Konakov that Tomorrow Will Never Come.

I’m afraid you’ll have to put up with other DJ and music projects in the future, but doing this one has been such fun in the last few years. You’ll find me passed out next the speakers, the last of my Thunderbird slowly dripping onto that sticky bit on the carpet.

Novy Mir - 27

Novy Mir is back with an erratic figure of eight around European ambient, electro & techno. Begun in Aberdeen’s misty never-ending cold vapor wave, shaped through two DJ sets at Gorki Café in Skopje in May, and finished in a Bosnian heatwave. The sun has settled on Sarajevo’s frontal mountain lobes like a migraine, and won’t shift.

As the climate’s wristwatches melt and we hide inside, there’s an off kilter, introspective ambient start to this through Nikolaenko and NM favourite Kevin Richard Martin, and Aphex Twin’s recent new track. Most of this set is from the last twelve months, taking in Koloah’s recent experimental new album, and increasingly clashing interventions from Prishtina’s rave scene, 150+ bpm from Tøtal’s last EP, and a strong thread from the Ukrainian constellation.

There’s been some great new music this year and there will be more postcards soon. But pin this gaudy rectangle of electronica on your fridge door until next time. Wish you were here!

Life’s a fog of displacement, tiredness, disappointment, deadlines, e-mails, new tasks pinging into an inbox played by a toddler with a xylophone.

Somewhere somehow there’s been time for new work from others living much the same life; there’s been one or two genuinely amazing records this year. Not all of them make this collage fed through the famous Novy Mir Lada gearbox mixer. 

Sasha, of turn of the century festivals and silverboxed superstar DJ fame has gone classical; producing ethereal beauty from the mulch of airdrawndagger and many other past masterpieces; Warrington-Runcorn NTDC is back in a rich vein of form; someone’s Instagram story put me onto Pastel Ghost and I’m annoyed at my algorithm for hiding her fast-paced synthpop;  Postdynamic Records, transplanted now to Germany, provide a minimalist surge with a strong acidic tang from Kirilovsky, towards the veterans Hardfloor, a screech from the queer dancefloors of Prishtina, and some hyper-production from the amazing Tøtal, before Hebo Scrub wisely tells us to stop drinking and go home.

Dragan Gjakonovski Shpato / Impulsi - Nostalgija (Macedonia/ SFR Yugoslavia, 1969/70)

I’ve spent a lot of time in Skopje recently, so there’s a strong Macedonian spine to this Novy Mir, which starts out very meditatively, unfolding slowly like a dripping flower in a weak sun. We hear from (amongst others) Ognen Zlatanov, Gligor Kondovski, Galatheia, and the late Mirko Popov, who sadly passed away just over a year ago. New work by Kevin Richard Martin and an icy blast from Scott Douglas Gordon leavens the Balkan loaf.

A lot of these recent tracks have been on my headphones at whispering volume during a staggering amount of work in the first three months of this year, and there’s a lot more of that to come, so less time for this. I’ll leave you to decide whether that’s a good thing or not.

All but two of these tracks are from the last three years, and if you’re not listening in Prilep, Perthshire or Poltava it’s unlikely you’ll have come across them. As we cycle through the bpms northwards look out for another scorcher from the hyper-productive Tøtal, and threads of minimal colour from Georgia, Ukraine, and Czechia. Then the lights go up at the end for Homme Fatale’s tear-streaked queer anthem, which dissolves into some Skopje big band from long ago. Off into the linden-tree scented night, following the candles and the clinking wind-chimes towards summer.

NovyMir-30

A lengthy, ambient & downtempo-heavy intervention, this. We begin with a lovley slice of T_A_M's new cake before a growling low-geared descent through some unusual sounds from mainly Ukraine, and old staples Mykola Lebed, Koloah and Bodya Konakov. This is a clammy palmed and anxious mix, plotting lots of new beginnings that never quite go anywhere. BarumBarum and Galatheia clash with Nastya Vogan's astonishing jounrey across contemporary Ukraine; Blackhaine delivers a painful insight into mental breakdown and paranoia; rain don't wash away stainless. A little bit of light housy relief is abruptly terminated by the remarkably contemporary sounding work of Arseny Avromov. Symphony of Sirens, amde in 1922 and "premiered" in Baku, was a megalomaniac Futurist farrago of bluster, braggadocio and bullshit that was a miserable failure at the time, and couldn't be realised technicallty for decades afterwards; directing three branches of the armed forces, two choirs, facotey hooters and public transport via two flaming cloths was never really going to work back then, was it. How very on point for 2025.

The first Novy Mir for nearly 5 months which I’ve been sitting on like an Emperor Penguin on an egg. Amidst all the shonkily mixed chaos there’s some genuinely spectral beauty from Two Way Mirrors, late night smoky Scandi introspection from André Bratten and Susanne Sundfør, a reworking of a famous Molchat Doma track by The Bug (alias of longtime Novy Mir staple Kevin Richard Martin), Skopje house, new and new-ish tracks from Ukraine, Armenia and Georgia, before Estella Boersma and Farr draw things to a close with some new 90s-style re-treads, fed through the kaleidoscopic breakdown of 2025. Leon Vynehall provides some welcome Sunday morning balm as the lights go up. Enjoy…
