Like many of you perhaps, I have been feeling glimmers of hope these days. And so I wrote a short piece for clarinet and strings that expresses that yearning for hope.

Hope

Sometimes our eyes meet
like distant sides of a lake
that can never touch.

There is an empty boat nestled
in the weeds, drifted to shore.
I take it and go looking for you.

With each bargain struck,
we learn more about
the stranger who sits between us.

I find you on a sun-bleached dock.
When I reach you the rowboat
bumps the planks and the wooden

sound raises your eyes to mine.
Bluegills scatter  
in the sun-drenched water.
