According to Stephen Hill, co-founder of a radio show called Hearts of Space, the term is used to describe music that evokes a feeling of contemplative spaciousness. Hill states that space music can range in character, the sonic texture of the music can be simple or complex, it can be instrumental or electronic, it may lack conventional melodic, harmonic, or rhythmic features, and may be less concerned with the formal compositional schemes associated with other styles of music.

Space music can evoke a "continuum of spatial imagery and emotion", which can be beneficial for introspection, and for developing, through a practice of deep listening, an awareness of the spatiality of sound phenomenon. This type of psychonautic listening can produce a subtle trance-like state in certain individuals which can in turn lead to sensations of flying, floating, cruising, gliding, or hovering. 

Space music is used by some individuals for both background enhancement and foreground listening, often with headphones, to enable states of relaxation, contemplation, inspiration, and generally peaceful expansive moods; it may promote health through relaxation, atmospherics for bodywork therapies, and effectiveness of meditation.

Pushing sounds that are as much drone-inspired as they are psychedelic and nature-driven, his remit falls within the deeper shades of electronic music. 2019 has proven to be a busy year so far, with shows in London, Berlin, Lithuania, Morocco and Tbilisi to be followed by an Astral Industries x Mysteries of the Deep Far East tour, which includes a night in Seoul (at vurt) on October 26th. 2019.

Hello there. For the 37th episode of the series, I introduce you to Koen Hoets with a deep and immersive exploration of sound. Here are his words :

« Still exploring the way I want to present my ideas for ambient music that can trigger our synesthesia sense but then In a more imaginary way. Having experienced this a few times at some interesting nights, I would really like to share my thoughts on that to listeners so they can maybe get the same experience. 

Playing with a thin line between low tempo dubby sounds and the more darker ambient lines, I want to create a tension. In some parts of the set you will emerge in deep thought while some subtle shifts of direction in sound can give a feeling of distraction which is meant to lead you to a more deeper form of listening. 

I am also preparing something special for the Moroccan festival "Under the desert stars" this summer. »

Hello there, let's welcome lunar convoy for the 38th episode of our journey. 

Currently living in Brussels, the man is actually a rising star on the local scene, regularly playing in the greatest techno clubs such as Fuse, C12, Zodiak, as well at festivals like the mighty Voltage in Belgium or the beautiful La Vallée Électrique in southern France. He is also known as a resident of Metropolis, an intimate daytime party concept in Brussels, and for being the co-founder of the deep techno label Norite. Here is his very first ambient podcast, such a nice pleasure to count it to the Stellar Series !

Stellar Series Episode 38 - lunar convoy (What Future Holds)

It is undeniable that we are living in uncertain times. For those of us failing to fit the patriarchal, neoliberalist mould we have lost hope in the future. We can see capitalism is not working but we cannot yet envisage an alternative. We discover that the stability we were instructed to obtain whether it be financial, political or ecological, is fleeting, if at all. The resulting anxiety is an instrument of neoliberalism that prevents many of us from being able to raise consciousness of the structural injustices that alienate us.

In a world where security is no longer feasible, the only constant we can rely on is change. Barad teaches us that the world is a dynamic process of intra-activity and materialisation, an ongoing ebb and flow of agency. The Buddhist Law of Impermanence proves that nothing in this world is eternal.

Regardless of ones point of reference we can understand that every aspect of life, physical and mental is in flux and perhaps this transience is the only thing we can depend on.

Each month we invite an artist to ruminate on these ideas and create an hour of relief from these anxieties. A temporary suspension of reality, where the listener can speculate on alternate modes of existence that reject hetero- patriarchal systems of oppression.

This month we have invited @martinou3000 to respond to this concept.

Australian singer Penelope Trappes came into her own on Penelope One, her debut solo album released via Optimo back in summer of 2017. She followed it up with her sophomore release Penelope Two at the end of last year, this time making a home on fabric's inhouse label Houndstooth. Musically both albums signalled a shift away from the dancefloor-focused productions she'd become known for as one half of The Golden Filter; think minimal soundscapes, distant echoing vocals and sparse atmospheric textures wrought with emotion.

June saw the release of Redeux, her second LP on Houndstooth, which saw her invite several producers to rework the original tracks first heard on Penelope Two. Amongst those tasked with creating their own reimaginations were Cosey Fanny Tutti, Mogwai, Throwing Snow and Aasthma, the collaborative project of Peder Mannerfelt and Par Grindvik.
