MFM: Salut Dang Khoa, welcome to our podcast series. Had a nice summer?

DK: Hey! Thanks for having me. My summer was pretty cool, I was happy to play some nice festivals and gigs in Europe. I also had a little break to go on vacation with some friends in Marseille to enjoy the sea and the South coast of France.

MFM: Speaking about summer, your music has quite an exotic touch in which melody and percussion both seem to play a pivotal role. Where does that come from? 

DK: At the very beginning, it was simply inspired by the kind of house music I was listening to. But it changed through the years. I had a period when I was into industrial stuff, and I’ve been really inspired by the textures, by that sensation of mechanical groove and how the percussions were used. It kind of lead me to listen to the roots of music, and got into ritual sounds. Regarding the melodies, I don’t know man, it’s maybe because I’ve listened to too much R’n’B when I was a teenager haha.

MFM: But you're not a trained musician in one way or another? Like, can you read notes and play keys or other instruments maybe?

DK: I played violin when i was very young at the Rennes Conservatory of music for 6 years but it was a long time ago and i didn't practice since. I still can read notes but i'm super slow when it's about to play a musical score with other instruments now.

MFM: Would you say you have a D.K. workflow when in the studio?

DK: I like to have a precise idea of what I want to do before I start, even if it’s going to change completely during the process. Also, the shape of a track will really depend on what I’m listening to at the moment. I can easily get lost sometimes, producing something that is totally different of what I’m doing but I always learn some new technics. It’s a good way to find new ideas as well. Most of the time, I work on the same loop until I’m satisfied, almost all the elements of the track have to be already present on this loop, so I can have a vision of what it’s going to look like. Then, I know it will be easy to structure, edit and finish.

MFM: Interesting, for a lot of producers making arrangements seems a tough task or annoying burden even. What's your trick?

DK: I start with the  rhythm structure then focus my work on finding the main theme of a track,  and i build everything around it. If the beat and the  hook are strong enough it's usually not a tough task to make the arrangements.

MFM: You've been putting out music not only as D.K., how come?

DK: I decided to use that 45ACP moniker to focus my work more on sound textures and beats. It was maybe more heavy and club-oriented than what I used to do as D.K.. But now, I’m trying to combine everything in one project to create more contrast in my music. I’m generally interested by the opposition of textures and sounds in music. For instance, I like to mix raw percussion parts with clean drums or melancholic cold pads with naive midi melodies.

MFM: So, what can tell us about the mix? Any specific theme behind it?

DK: It’s a collage of tracks that I’ve been listening to at home recently and some edits I’ve made, from ambient and tribal to Japanese stuff. It’s obviously not what people can expect to hear me play in a festival or club but I would say that it’s more the vibe that I’m trying to create when i’m performing live.

MFM: Last but not least, any exciting news you'd like to share?

DK: I’m wrapping up my next Ep at the moment, it will be the third volume of my trilogy dedicated to club music on Antinote. I also have a release to come out soon on 12th Isle, and a couple of remixes.

Philou’s coming of age is defined by the forces of musical and cultural diversity, living in worlds seemingly estranged from one another. As an adopted black kid, Philou grew up with the loving care of his adoptive Dutch grandparents. His grandfather taught him to listen to jazz and classical music from a very young age, provoking a surge of curiosity about his own African heritage. He found Nigerian and Congolese tapes from his African birth parents that were in his family’s possession and started digging into the traditional sounds of Africa. Through music, Louzolo developed an early sensitivity towards cultural expressions in general. Not merely for the continent that carries his roots, but also for sci-fi and Japanese anime. He began experimenting with producing electronic music as a way to unite the various realms of his omnifarious inner world.

Composing his identity as a performing artist began years later, guided by the nightlife scenes of Rotterdam and Amsterdam. With an extensive pan-african sound, he began reaching the hearts of large crowds, ultimately pushing his popularity across national and international borders where he made appearances at the Panorama Bar, Nuits de Sonores, DGTL, Le Sucre, DJOON, North Sea Jazz, De School, Dekmantel Selectors. A highlight of his early success is the release of his EP ‘Alkbulan Republic‘, which was a tribute to Nigerian pioneers such as Fela Kuti and William Onyeabor. This EP was recorded in collaboration with musicians from Ghana and Nigeria and mixed and produced by Philou in the city where he currently resides, Rotterdam. This vinyl gem was repressed four times and hit the Juno bestseller charts. His influence even grew into the embodiment of a larger message,  containing awareness about socio-political issues within the industry concerning representation, (musical) ownership and race.

Being away from the scene entirely in 2018 led him to mature his musical ambitions. Sidestepping Afro cliches in favor of appropriating its tropical nature led him to revisit his childhood, where he found new purpose in the futuristic fantasy worlds familiar to him as a young boy. Reconnecting with his sense of self as an artist and producer, urged him to avoid focussing merely on the diffusion of traditional records from Africa but rather to expand its scope by adding layers of obscurity found in techno, sci-fi, acid house and electro. Altering the expectations of genre, the prism of Afrofuturism in his new sound even reflects afrohouse, afrobeats, kuduro and more. Louzolo’s vision is fueled by artists like Drexciya, Black Coffee, Jeff Mills, and Oumou Sangare.

His comeback symbolizes an intrinsic, deeply personal need to connect the traditional ancestral sound with progressive sounds of intergalactic electronic music. The ultimate expression of his break from the scene is the birth of his label Wokoundou, which is not just a record label but a world in itself, more like a multiverse, where time and space create an endless surge of movement, knowledge, creativity and play connecting the then and now of African sounds. Louzolo is in the process of creating, keeping one foot on the African soil while both his hands are reaching for the future sky above and beyond us, with expanding the genre of African music as his ultimate quest.

Originating from Glasgow, Becky Marshall was raised on an eclectic mixture of avant garde electronics and techno which was rooted in parties and culture across the city at the time. Some refer to it as some sort of 'golden age' whilst others simply reflect on the good times and the musical legacy it left behind. To this day there are "classic" mixtapes which float amidst circles in the city, tales of mixes and sets from parties long ago - memories from the likes of Club 69 in Paisley, Pure in Edinburgh and vintage university radio recordings. 

All of the above has helped formulate an eclectic breadth of musical knowledge, one which is perhaps best showcased through Ribeka's collaborative monthly radio show alongside Sofay on NTS. She often focusses on the darker fringes of electronic music - exploring the far flung reaches of dub, krautrock, wave, techno and beyond. 

Ribeka has also played a prominent figure amidst the wider musical community in Glasgow, as a respected DJ she has hosted parties, held down residencies and been a source of musical education in a city which is ever changing. 

We are delighted to be able to pull her away from a hectic day job to record a mix.
