October 9, 2019 / 07:11 / Linwood Ave & Barker Ave to ECMC / Driving to the Hospital / As the saying goes, you are always 15 minutes away from wherever you need to be in Buffalo / While there are pockets of the city amenable to joyful walking, the city is largely one for driving /  It is well to be only 15 minutes from meeting a friend for lunch, 15 minutes from a timely arrival at work, 15 minutes from the café offering coffee as respite, and 15 minutes, relative to wherever you find yourself to be, from home / But this time driving alone accumulates – what can be done with the time? / Sometimes I drive to work and think of the patients I will see and whether they were well overnight in the hospital / Somedays I remember past experiences I had driving these well-worn roads (e.g., a conversation with a friend in the passenger seat, a feeling of excitement en route to a concert, a panic attack on the way to the airport this past March) / Sometimes I think of nothing and everything as I listen to the road I travel, the engine I use, the vehicles I pass, the position I keep, my past, my present, my future, fantasy and serendipity / There is much to remember and to forget, to communicate and to keep, to narrate and to hear – the self, the sounds, the city… //
