The evocative sound of a unique music culture, bridging a thousand years from the ancient to the contemporary. Tallinn features the world-famous Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra plus two organs—all recorded in the iconic Niguliste church. With a pure, wintry, ‘Nordic’ sound, Tallinn is equally well suited to early music as to contemporary minimalism and avant garde, adding distinctive textures to dramatic scores, underscoring, and any other expressive compositions.

PROGRAM NOTE
Ramification is the final panel of my Triptych, coming after Negative Capability, for electric guitar, and Whispering lunar incantations, for prepared harp. All three pieces focus on the creation of an idiosyncratic, (relatively) unpitched sound world and emphasize gesture within a developing and evolving structure. Ramification is most concerned with different types of surfaces and branching paths/connections (ramifications) between them. Sometimes materials develop linearly along these paths, while jumping suddenly from one to the next at other times. My hope is that listening occurs on multiple levels of detail for both the performer and audience. Similar types of gestures (dragging vs scratching vs striking) occur on vastly different surfaces (gongs vs floor tom vs wood plank vs guiro vs chimes) with different implements (mallet vs superball vs mallet shaft vs brush vs nails), resulting in a range of drastically different sound qualities that seek to unify themselves, but may not always do so.

A year after my published album, CINEMATIC NATURE was released, I have decided to release a remastered version of the entire album. This is not because I was not happy with the original, but I felt it the sound was a little dark compared to my usual sound, so I aimed to bring it into line with all my other stuff. I also did it as a technical learning exercise.

Speaker Bio:
Dr. Chad Pecknold received his PhD from the University of Cambridge (UK) and since 2008 he has been a Professor of Historical & Systematic Theology in the School of Theology at the Catholic University of America in Washington, DC. He teaches in the areas of fundamental theology, Christian anthropology, and political theology. Pecknold is the author of a number of scholarly articles and books including most recently, Christianity and Politics: A Brief Guide to the History (Cascade, 2010) and The T&T Clark Companion to Augustine and Modern Theology (Bloomsbury, 2014). Dr. Pecknold is also a frequent contributor to debates in the public square, writing regular columns for First Things and 

National Review on a range of topics related to the importance and impact of Church teaching on social and political questions. Dr. Pecknold is frequently sought after for his opinion on current events, and has been quoted in hundreds of news outlets around the world such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. A self-described "Augustinian-Thomist," Pecknold is an Associate Editor for the English Edition of the international Thomistic journal of theology, Nova et Vetera, and co-edits with Fr. Thomas Joseph White, O.P., the new Sacra Doctrina series at Catholic University of America Press. Dr Pecknold is currently writing a book on Augustine’s City of God. Dr. Pecknold resides in Alexandria, VA with his wife, Dr. Sara Pecknold (who teaches Music history at CUA) and their five children.

The microphones and the recorder have been left the whole night.
The photo has been shot in the morning when I came back to pick the stuff up.

Hannah A Barnes is a Montréal-based composer, conductor, and performer.  Her compositional interests are centered around creating interlocking cycles of works that pursue common goals through different means, or the inverse. Musical materials that are fragile, off-kilter, and seemingly incompatible are of greatest interest to her work. Significant works include a Triptych of solo pieces for electric guitar, prepared harp, and solo percussion, and an ongoing cycle of pieces ranging from solo to large ensemble.
Currently a DMus student at McGill University studying with Prof. Jean Lesage and Prof. Philippe Leroux, Hannah completed a Master’s degree with distinction in composition at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois (MM ’21, BM ’19) with additional studies in conducting. Creative collaboration is central to her artistic practice. She has worked closely with soloists including oboist Kyle Bruckmann, guitarist Jesse Langen, hornist Tarre Nelson, bassist Nate Beaver, percussionist Alexander Garde, and pianist Ian Pace to develop new works. She has conducted her own work and premieres of works by other composers with Ensemble Dal Niente in the DePaul and Dal Niente Summer Residency for New Music. She has participated in summer festivals including the DePaul and Dal Niente Summer Residency for New Music, the Summer Institute for Contemporary Performance Practice (SICPP), SPLICE Institute, the Darmstadt Summer Courses, and the Yarn/Wire Institute. Hannah’s music has been presented at venues including the Darmstadt Summer Courses, the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in Manhattan, the Eastman School of Music, City University London, and various venues in Chicago. Her electric guitar piece, "Negative Capability," was presented in a two-player re-reading (as "Negative Capability II") at the 2022 Omaha Under the Radar Festival in Omaha, Nebraska in collaboration with Jesse Langen. She was a recipient of an Honorable Mention in the 2021 Morton Gould Young Composer's Award competition for her work “five images.” Hannah is also the director of the rhythm is image new music initiative, in which she performs and conducts, with an emphasis on experimental performance practices. Teaching is also important to Hannah; she has taught theory to wonderful high schoolers at the Chicago Music Academy, music majors at DePaul University, and a variety of students at McGill University. She is involved in Montréal's thriving contemporary music culture as the Vice-President of Le Vivier InterUniversitaire.
Forthcoming projects include a large ensemble work for McGill University's Contemporary Music Ensemble, a piece for clarinet and electronics, and a piece for violin and electronics with multiple configurations.
Hannah also enjoys practicing yoga and spending time with her small but mighty terrier, Kaylee.
