As I wander through my childhood home
her incantations pull me along
and I'm that little girl at ten
I remember how she had the knack
of pointing out just what I lacked,
and then, she'd tuck me in again
and her words stung and flowed like honeyed water
God knows I loved her as I fought her
I knew I was not the kind of daughter she wanted me to be
but she was just like me

Her childhood years weren't kind to her,
her father's voice and the smell of liquor
rose above Depression poverty
but she was disciplined and bright
her intellect knew how to fight
and she used a fountain pen to set her free
And her words sung and flowed like honeyed water
there within the walls of her ivory tower
she pushed back at everything that fought her
or brought her to her knees
God knows, she was just like me

and her words, like a storm that brings out treasures from the sea,
took their crazy course, and brought out the best in me

She loved me as she was loved
at an arms length with a boxing glove
full of words, words that made me strong
she pushed me, and I pushed back
a well-placed word was the best attack
and in the space between I wrote my songs
and my words sung and flowed like honeyed water 
I guess that's how I loved her as I fought her
I knew I was not the kind of daughter she wanted me to be
but she was just like me

Mothers, daughters say goodbye
privately, eye to eye
until no words are left unsaid
for all the time we sparred and fought
the road was hard but we finally got
one quiet afternoon of being friends
and our words sung and flowed like honeyed water
and as she rose, I reached out and caught her
she knew she was not the kind of daughter I wanted her to be
but she was just like me, and that's alright with me
