Back to the Bible in Canada

In a recent poll by Ipsos-Reid (April 2006) 62% of Canadians stated that they believed that “through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus, God provided the way for the forgiveness of sins.” Unfortunately, the percentage of those that attend church doesn’t come anywhere near 62%. Just one in four Canadians attends church on a weekly basis. Just a generation ago most Canadians had at least some knowledge of the what was in the Bible, but with the increase in the secularization of Canadian society over the past three decades, Biblical illiteracy in on the rise. Even though Back to the Bible has been a part of Canadian life for over 50 years, its presence is more important then ever.

Facts:
• The Canadian Radio and Television Commission, the media regulating body for Canada, didn’t allow any Christian radio stations until 1988. Since then, dozens of new Christian radio stations have gone on the air, and many of them now carry the programs of Back to the Bible. As new Christian stations get up and running, more opportunities become available.

• The province of Quebec, the heart of French-speaking Canada, is the least evangelized region in all of North and South America. Less than 1% claim to be evangelicals. The need for French-speaking Bible teaching radio programs is great.

• Back to the Bible Canada spends $850,000 a year on buying radio time. Much more is needed to impact non-English speaking Canadians with the Gospel.

It was back in 2004 when Miss Connie and Angus McDonald started making beautiful music together. A series of singles at first then, in 2006, their self-titled, 3 x platinum debut album.  Spearheaded by a spectacular salvo of chart topping hits – UFO, PICTURES and I LOVE IT – Sneaky Sound System won ARIA Awards for Breakthrough Artist and Best Dance Release, the first of 14 nominations to-date.

Second long-player and #1 album 2 arrived in 2008 with yet more dancefloor slayers in the form of KANSAS CITY, WHEN WE WERE YOUNG, and the #1 UK club smash IT'S NOT MY PROBLEM. In 2009 I WILL BE HERE, a collaboration with Dutch superstar DJ Tiesto, took Sneaky to the top of both the US dance airplay and UK club charts.

In late 2011 album number three, FROM HERE TO ANYWHERE, arrived, the title referencing its creation in hotel suites, planes, and studios around the world from here (Sydney) to just about everywhere (London, Paris, Ibiza, Moscow). Accolades from critics around the world flowed: MTV called it “an incredible effort” and Sydney’s Daily Telegraph said it’s “a delicious feast of world class dance-pop songs”. A nomination in the prestigious 2012 International DJ Awards in the Live Performance category underscored their escalating international reputation.

In the swirling midst of albums and tours, Connie lent her vocals and lyrics to albums from superstars Jay-Z, Kanye West and Snoop Dogg, and in 2013 she was a guest mentor on Australia’s biggest TV show, The Voice. Later that year, in a News Limited poll of musicians and critics to determine Australia’s greatest all-time singers; Connie came in at no. 18.

And then of course there’s SNEAKY SUNDAYS, the beloved club night they have been running for over 15 years in Sydney and, for four years, at the world renowned Mykonos landmark, Scorpios. It’s a celebration of house music, from slow chugging disco burners to groove laden techno stormers…where you always feel like you’re in the middle of summer. The past few years have seen Sneaky releasing music more akin to the sound of these weekly parties, like SUMMERTIME MADNESS, ALL I NEED IS YOU, and I AIN'T OVER YOU.

2017 saw Sneaky Sound System release underground club tune DO YA THING and, in September, fresh reworks of the mega-smash PICTURES flew into the upper reaches of the ARIA Club Chart, spending four weeks at #2. In March 2018, new remixes of I LOVE IT followed, reaching #3 on the ARIA Club Chart.

In 2018 CAN'T HELP THE WAY THAT I FEEL was released on the venerated UK dance label Cr2.  It reached #1 on both the UK Music Week Club Chart and the Beatport Global House chart, and #2 on the Beatport main (combined) chart. It remained in the top 40 for well over a year and UK national radio, including BBC Radio 1, widely supported the track with over 1900 spins.

The single WE BELONG arrived in mid-2019, followed later in the year by RAISE, a collaboration with hot French DJ/Producer Watermat. Sneaky Sundays became Sneaky Saturdays as Bali hotspot Mrs Sippy became the spectacular location for Sneaky’s much-adored weekly party during July-September.

Angus and Connie are currently back in their Bondi studio - expect more releases during the year - and a return to Mrs Sippy Bali for their weekly parties. And, as always, they’ll be touring extensively, captivating audiences at festivals and clubs around Australia and the world.

Across a long and distinguished career, B.Traits (Brianna Price) has proven herself to be a musical
artist of great versatility and panache. Equally comfortable commanding festival stages as she is
spinning jungle tunes in dark, intimate clubs, B.Traits backs up an enduring love of her craft with a
tireless work ethic and commitment to showcasing fresh, exciting music. From the raves of British
Columbia where she got her start, through a six-year stint at the BBC and onto more recent
endeavours such as booting up her alter-ego Baby T, Price’s passion has never wavered. In that time,
she’s distinguished herself through her exemplary production chops and DJ mixes of tracks which
orbit the groove-rich, percussion-driven poles of the hardcore continuum. Swing by any B.Traits set
and you’ll hear an eclectic mixture of deep, percussive, rolling techno grooves; find yourself at the
Baby T show and you’ll be plunged into the darkside strains of junglism and breakbeat machine-funk.
And for all her dedication to the dance, the more ambient-leaning releases of Price’s own Paciphonic
imprint demonstrate that by no means are her musical interests simply confined to the club.

As one of the longest standing independent record labels in the US, Nervous Records has built its reputation through a willingness to take chances on new sounds and new producers. Nervous was the first American label to sign and release tracks from such dance industry luminaries as Armand Van Helden, Paul Van Dyk and Nuyorican Soul. This spirit has enabled Nervous to build a catalogue of hits that spans the complete range of underground dance and hip hop genres.

The label was famous almost immediately when it started back in 1991 because of its eye-catching, very distinctive cartoon character logo. In addition the first three releases were produced by Roger S., Kenny Dope, and Todd Terry respectively, representing the three best house producers of that time. By 1992 Nervous was featured in magazines like Billboard, DJ Magazine (cover story), Mixmag, and ID, hailed by all as the “Sound of New York nitelife.”

Nervous’ first major dance release came in 1992, with “Feel Like Singing” by Sandy B. Nervous decided at that point to focus its energy on expanding the label’s musical field. The label’s first step outside the house music arena was with the Brooklyn, NY-based rap group, Black Moon, whose single “Who Got The Props” virtually put Brooklyn back on the map as a center of hip hop. At the same time, the label decided to alter the Nervous character for this release, giving it specific hip hop characteristics, and calling the hip hop label Wreck Records. Massive success followed with the Wreck imprint, as hits soon followed by Smif-N-Wessun, and Funkmaster Flex.

Nervous decided to continue to expand its musical boundries in 1993 by signing Mad Lion, which would be the first reggae artist on the Weeded imprint. Once again, there was huge success as Mad Lion’s single “Take It Easy” sold over 250,000 units.

Meanwhile, the Nervous merchandise continued to produce massive sales numbers as it established itself as one of the most favored t-shirts for the youth cultures of America, Japan, and many European countries.

In 1994, the label decided it was time to move into the electronic genre, and started an imprint called Sorted. The first artist on that label was Josh Wink, who went by the artist name Winx. While Winx’s debut release was a critical success although not a major seller, Winx’s follow-up release “Don’t Laugh” became the American dance community’s most talked about single, and ended up selling several hundred thousand units worlwide. Subsequently Nervous released Winx’s debut album, “Left Above The Clouds.” This album was one of the first “electronica” albums to be released, and lead to Josh Wink being signed to Sony as an artist. Nervous also released an album by two Long Island based dj’s, DJ Micro and Vicious Vic. The album, entitled “Progress Into Our Future,” since became a seminal album for the crew of Long Island dj’s that currently dominate clubs with their hard trance sound.

In 1996, Nervous virtually single-handedly created a garage house music revival by releasing the debut solo artist album by house music legend Byron Stingily. Byron was formerly the lead singer of gold-selling group Ten City. His second single on Nervous, “Get Up,” went to number one on dance charts around the world, including the Billboard Magazine club chart in America.. For his album, “The Purist,” Nervous assembled an all-star cast of legendary House producers, including Frankie Knuckles, Masters At Work, David Morales, Basement Boys, Maurice Joshua and MK.

As the musical trends continued to evolve in the late 90’s, Nervous continued to create new imprints to remain at the cutting edge of all independent labels. Nervous Dog was created to accommodate the emerging harder-edged house sound of New York; Strapped was the home for uptempo, club oriented hip hop Party tracks; and Nervous Chill released the down tempo, jazzy grooves that are always in vogue in the newest restaurants.

The label also has had many successful tours over the years. One of the biggest was in 2,000, when the Nervous tour was sponsored by Playboy Magazine and KAMEL cigarettes, and featured DJ’s Jackie Christie, Razor-n-Guido and DJ Escape, along With PA’s by Nervous artists Byron Stingily, Charlotte And Kim English. In addition, Nervous created what became one of the Winter Music Conference’s most original Parties, the Nervous After-hours breakfast at Denny’s, which featured an International list of dj’s entertaining conference attendees at 5:00 AM while they ate their grand slam Denny’s breakfast.

In 2000 and 2001, the energy tribal sound dominated the US club and Nervous gave America’s club-goers four of the its most dominant anthems, “Skin” by Charlotte, “Ssst…Listen” by Jonah, “Unspeakable Joy” by Kim English and Dive In The Pool by Barry Harris featuring Pepper Meshay. During this same time, the label has also created many successful compilation series, among them “Hip Hop Independent’s Day,” and “Future Progressive,” and “Club Nervous.

As the hits grew in number, so did the value of the catalogue for sampling purposes. Nervous songs have been sampled in major hits by Mariah Carey, New Edition, Coolio, Flip Squad, Basement Jax, George Michael, Soulsearcher and more..

In 2006 Nervous gave the US one of the biggest dance radio records with What A Feeling by Peter Luts & Dominico, a track which won the 2007 WMC award for Best Euro Dance track. In addition, Nervous delivered the most memorable US underground track of the year with Ralph Falcon – I Need Someone, which was also number one club record of 2007 according to Billboard Magazine.

In 2008 Nervous had two of the top five most played records of the year at dance radio, with Bellatrax feat. Sophia May/I Can’t Help Myself and Every Word by Ercola featuring Daniella, and ended the year as the two most played label at dance radio in the USA according to Billboard Magazine.

Nervous has also made a strong foray into the compilation market, building a roster with some of the most credible house music. The past twelve months has seen full length cd’s from Oscar G, Ralph Falcon, Funkagenda, Mark Brown, Behrouz, Chris Lake, Starkillers & Austin Leeds, DJ Theo, Exacta and Marlon D. Second half of 2009 will see releases from Danny Krivit, Frankie Knuckles, Tom Stephan, Peter Bailey and Richie Santana and Anane (produced by Louie Vega. 

In the grand tradition of Nervous launching sub-labels to embrace the next sounds to take over Nitelife ... In 2011 we launched Nurvous Records.  With the Indie Dance / Nu-Disco sound that has erupted from England and is now barreling towards full speed in America, one of our primary goals is to provide innovative homegrown style; and bringing back emotion to the music, squashing the over-commercialized big-room invasion.

In today’s electronic music world there are not many artists who can lay claim to a legacy like that of DJ T. Born in Dusseldorf, DJ T. (aka Thomas Koch,) re-located to Frankfurt with his family in the late 70s. During his formative years, he fell for the hypnotic grooves of disco, inspired by his parents’ record collec-tion. At the age of nine he was already completely enraptured by music and that love affair continues until this very day. He began an obsessive quest to collect music, feeding his soul with everything from Disco and Hi-Nrg, through to early Hip-Hop and Electro, Soul, Funk and R’n’B. The groovy, infectious rhythms of all those genres continue to permeate into the music he makes and plays today, providing an intrinsic part of his sound ethic. 
He took up breakdancing, before becoming a DJ, playing at private parties ini-tially before landing his first professional gigs in the late eighties. This period proved to be a pivotal moment in his life as Acid House swept through Europe, landing in Frankfurt and taking over with the launch of Sven Väth’s legendary Omen club in 1988. The first wave of House and Techno took hold and T. was there at the forefront, absorbing all the fresh new sounds from Chicago, Detroit and the UK. He picked up a residency at the infamous Music Hall and held resi-dencies at countless clubs across the city during the next 10 years from Plastik and Dorian Gray to The Box. By the end of the nineties, he was one of Frank-furt’s best-known selectors. 
In 1989 DJ T. tapped into another side of his creative energy to set up Groove Magazine. Identifying a gap in the market and fuelled by a need to satisfy his own desire for specialised music journalism, which focused on his interests – namely underground dance music. Under his leadership the magazine was launched into the public’s consciousness and he guided Groove to become one of Europe’s premier dance music publications, which it still is today. 
DJ T.’s progression continued at a pace, as he launched his own club, Monza, using the experience gained through a decade of club events and tours under the Groove Magazine banner. He also invested his skills and knowledge into con-ceiving Get Physical – a label, which remains one of the world’s best- known House and Techno platforms. Though he left in 2010, T. still occasionally A&Rs for the label, lending his uncanny ability to uncover new talent to the seminal label. 
Production-wise, he has been consistent ever since his debut release, the ‘Mon-sterbaze’ EP with Steve Bug, which was released on Poker Flat in 2000. Since then, T. has released several well-received EPs, a slew of remixes and three al-bums, ‘Boogie Playground’ in 2005, ‘The Inner Jukebox’ produced with Tho-mas Schumacher in 2009 and ‘Pleasure Principle’ in 2011. His special touch has also been employed by numerous labels to curate compilation mixes , including ‘United Under The Ball – 30 Years Of Disco’ in 2011 and ‘The House That Jack Built Vol 1 & 2’ in 2012. In 2013 he celebrated 25 years of DJing with a very personal mix compilation, followed also by ‘Body Language 15’ and col-laboration with Defected and Strictly Rhythm to celebrate the latter’s 25th anni-versary. DJ T.’s reputation for being a master selector has been cemented by these superlative collections of music, each of which has received widespread praise, often featuring many of T.’s own edits of classic tracks. 
Despite so many accolades, his passion for music remains staunch, recently making several key changes to his professional life that have inspired him to explore new terrains. With hot new releases on AUS Music, Moon Harbour, True Soul and Jackathon representing his continued to desire to push his crea-tive boundaries. 
A highly-skilled DJ and producer and an A&R with an uncanny ability to dis-cover a nurture new talent, DJ T. is a master selector and one of the industry’s most influential figures.

VonSTroke, Ark & Philipp Gorbachev (vynil only), They are working actively on
their new album "The Darkside of the cool",
