Chime sounds created by tapping a variety of crystal glasses with a wooden chopstick. Then convolution reverb was applied using a xylophone/toy marimba impulse response.

Xylophone Crystal Chimes

My first attempt at writing a song. Created in Ableton Live. I think it has a retro electronic-music sound. I'm especially pleased with the high-hat pickup before the beat, which I had to manually create and add in. It's a small detail, but I think it makes a big difference. 

I had worked on this about a year ago and picked it back up for  Airwiggles.com 2023 Noisevember competition. Theme: Retro

Assignment #19 from Audio Playground: "Create a 90-sec max piece that includes at least 10 seconds of [the supplied song], and also the sound of a wave.... Guest prompt from Marcus Bagala."  (https://www.audioplayground.xyz/assignments). 

I incorporated an excerpt of an old cassette recording of my great aunt reciting meditation techniques to help reduce her chronic back pain. I love hearing the sound of her voice, even though I can hear (and remember) how much pain she was in. She made the recording in the 1980s or 90s. 

I also used the music supplied with the assignment, plus my own recording of the ocean.

The Pain

My husband said this song sounds like it belongs on a UK cop show, while homicide detectives drive through rainy, picturesque English and Scottish countrysides trying to solve the case or rush to prevent another muuuuurder.

Composed in Piano Motifs & GarageBand for iOS. Mixed in Reaper.

UK Cop Show

I recorded these sounds on a Zoom F3 with a LOM Geofón. They're the sounds of a Concept 2 Model B rowing machine:  1) slowly gliding the seat forward and back 2) tapping on the seat 3) pulling the row bar and letting the flywheel spin until it stopped. Maybe it sounds like a monster ... or maybe it sounds like an engine. Either way, it's deep, rumbly, and growly.

I decided to try my hand @ music 🤘🤘

The music composition was made in Piano Motifs (iOS app created by @Azul3DApps), which creates MIDI files. I exported the files to Ableton Live, where I arranged it and added drums. Then I mixed it in Reaper.

Made from a variety of sounds I recorded, such as sleet hitting my window, water in my sink, grains of rice dropping in a glass measuring cup, and crackling plastic, plus bubble and sizzle sounds from freesound.org.

Noisevember 2024_23: Wildlife

Skeumorphic as defined on Airwiggles: "Skeuomorphism is typically a graphic design term (though it can refer to audio too). It’s the act of designing digital assets based on their real world counterparts! For example, the trash can icon on MacOS is skeumorphic (as is the sound it makes when you drop a file into it)."

So for this challenge, I made a screen video-capture of a File Explorer window opening and closing on my computer. Then I added the sound of my real-world home-office window opening and closing for the sound effect of the File Explorer window opening and closing.

This malfunctioning electrical thingy seems like it would sting if you were standing near it when it went off. Made from a couple of Vital synth presets and home recordings of rice and beans pouring into a plastic cup, crackling plastic, and droplets of water in hot oil in a frying pan.

The prompt was literally "?!" which left a lot of questions swirling around in my head.

So I made this on my iPad with an app called Harmony Bloom and a couple of synths.

The initial idea for Q as a prompt was related to the texture of food (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Q_texture), so I used a recording of myself eating an apple and tried to add another Q element by making it sound like a duck quacking. 

It’s not quite there, but I had fun playing with it.
