Covid Hotline Chorus is a seven minute medley of NHS 111 calls, reimagined as a chorus of unaccompanied singing.

I am a boy

Every sound in this piece is uttered by a person saying out loud what they most desire. All of the voices are natural, without effect or auto-tune. 

The piece is an exercise in democratic composition, in which all voices were included, and the composer worked from raw audio excerpts, finding moments of pitch and texture from which to build the tune. 

Imagine the country were a choir; what would it sound like?

The first test piece was made with the participation of No Boundaries symposium delegates, Autumn 2015

38 people wrote postcards. 35 people recorded their voice. 

Every recorded voice was included. No voice was auto tuned.

I Desire

Jennifer Bell (M.A. Cantab) is a composer, producer and performance artist. 

She specialises in a-cappella, but works across genres in theatre, as well as making pieces for radio. She creates song portraits of people, often drawn from verbatim, gathered from interviews. Her close-harmony compositions combine folk storytelling with the stylistic influences of folk and jazz, and she often uses the voice to create the textures and rhythms of dance music.
