The first outing on the brand-new Incidental Sonics record label comes in the form of a single from label founder Constrict. Malevolence / Goddess is an all-encompassing release that explores the diverse sounds of underground drum & bass music, providing yin and yang in equal measure. Both tracks draw from a pool of influence that favours breakbeats and heavy low-end, however the execution and mood of each is totally distinct. This allows for a release that displays moments of harsh tension and menacing atmosphere as well as instances of calm disposition and blissful ambience.
Malevolence has an abrasive and threatening feel from the off, with atonal sci-fi synthesis and droning textures colouring in the intro’s sonic palette. The crisp, distorted breakbeats and chest-rattling bass fill just enough space to cause devastation without detracting from the track’s desolate and isolated aesthetic. Evolving at a breakneck pace over its duration before vanishing without a trace, this one will be essential listening for fans of the darker side of modern jungle and minimal drum & bass music.
Goddess pays homage to the sprawling, cinematic style of jungle music that was once championed by Moving Shadow and Reinforced Records in the early-mid nineties. Thick pads and a gorgeous vocal section create an ethereal foundation upon which warm bass and shuffling breaks are applied. This side opposes Malevolence in almost every way, with a low-intensity structure that rolls out with no sense of urgency, finally resulting in a beatless outro with a strong ambient influence.
Fans of the Incidental Sonics radio show on Noods Radio and Threshold FM will be familiar with the sounds on display on this debut release, which also sets the tone for future releases. A super limited run of 10” vinyl versions will also be available via Bandcamp, so keep your eyes peeled for those.
