Paul Gerhardt (1600's)translated into German the Latin text of Bernard of Clairvaux (1153) and Johann S. Bach (1729)composed several harmony arrangements of this popular Passion Hymn. The melody derives from a popular love song: "Mein G'muth ist Mir Verwirret" (My Mind is Confused)by the Renaissance composer, Hans Leo Hassler.

O Sacred Head, Now Wounded

"Hanerot" is a traditional Hebrew tune sung at Hanukkah.  Loosely translated the words mean "We light these candles for the miracles and wonders in the world to come."  "Hanerot Halalu, Anu Madlikin."

Hanerot

This Swedish hymn was translated by Evie (Tornquist) Karlsson and published in a hymnal (English) in 1986.   Music and text by Emmy Kohler in 1898, it has the theme of domestic harmony and inner peace displayed with candlelight and stars (especially the Star of Bethlehem).

A Thousand Candles

This well-known Latin tune from the 8th-9th century (translated into English 1861) is played by 2 Mountain Dulcimers in duet form.

O Come, O Come

A German Advent/Christmas Chorale from 1524 text accredited to Martin Luther.  Bach arranged it more than once. Loosely translated to English as "Savior of the Nations, Now Come" or "Now Come, Savior of the heathens."  Played by two Mountain Dulcimers as a duet.

A second arrangement of a Lutheran Advent Chorale for 2 Mountain Dulcimers.  Text credited to Martin Luther.  "Nun Komm, der Heiden Heiland."

Although this carol is sung in English it was translated from the German language: "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen".   An old Advent Christmas Carol tune, it was arranged by Michael Praetorius.

This 16th Century traditional English Christmas Carol is arranged and played by 2 Mountain Dulcimers (duet).

God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen

An old traditional Irish Christmas carol from at least the 12th century.

Wexford Carol

"  'Twas in the Moon of Wintertime"  Historically, Canada's Oldest Christmas song, it is believed that Jesuit missionary, Jean de Brebeuf used an older traditional French folk tune and wrote lyrics in the language of the Huron/Wendat people in 1624 using their culturual religious concepts:  Angels = Sky people, Wise men = Elders.".
