Originally written by Goebel Reeves in the great depression, this song was also in the repertoire of Woody Guthrie. His son did a version too. It's a simple but moving song

This song was originally co-written by Hank Thompson and Lynn Russwurm (My Dad) and released by Hank Thompson in 1961. It found a whole new life when, many years later, it was picked up by Martin L. Gore of Depeche Mode. Recently, a version by Charlie Crocker was used in the TV series, "American Gods". It's an unusual song, and I've liked it since I first heard it when I was kid. I've recorded two version of it - here's the one from my recent album, SELF PORTRAIT.
