Katz’s latest single, It’ll Never End, arrives a year after the underground success of their sophomore EP, The Last American Virgin, and features lead guitarist, James Bradbury on his vocal debut for the trio. Furthermore, it also showcases the explosive, hard hitting playing style of new drummer, Paddy Murphy, whose influence on the track is reminiscent of both Dennis Wilson of the Beach Boys and Joy Division and New Order’s Stephen Morris. Conceptually, Bradbury’s lyrics on the single draw upon his nostalgia for better times, wishing that he could stay and live in these memories instead of returning to the mundanity of the band’s regular lives. As melancholy as the song’s subject may seem however, Katz forces a sunny disposition upon the track with their trademark angular guitar melodies, rumbling chords, break neck tempo and vocal harmonies dripping in spring reverb. Put simply, It’ll Never End is Katz at the peak of their powers, showing off their knack for infectious Surf Punk, despite residing 50 miles from the nearest beach.
