South London has become an endless wellspring of creativity. Our very own Bradley Zero continues to make things happen with the vinyl-only debauchery of Rhythm Section, and just around the corner 22a Records are turning their penchant for half-slung beats and soul-flecked rhythms into a full blown movement. 

Henry Wu is a member of the latter making steadfast advances with his output. Rewind back to last February's delectable two-tracker for Natural Complexion and the back-to-back Jean Bassa cut for home stable 22a as evidence.

"Just Negotiate" is one of five groove-inducing jams from the Negotiate EP, housed by Alex Nut's HoTep imprint and out on February 16th. Powered by Simeon Jones' lush vocal sways, it teeters gracefully between the crevices of soul and synth-oozing funk. Groove on.

Broken beat’s legacy is one that’s easy to miss if not given ample TLC. Just a quick bat of the eyelids, and one of the capital’s most exciting movements can flash by. A movement that inadvertently nudged soul and boogie through the early 2000s in its own way. A movement that fed on the best parts of jazz, soul and electronica and left a lot of goodness in its wake.

The producers behind 2000black are some of its main powerhouses. Established in 1998 by Dego, the likes of multi-instrumentalist Kaidi Tatham and musical director Akwasi are key ambassadors of the sound.

After a 2014 that spawned beauties like Darkest Pumpkin‘s “Let It Be/That Feeling” and March’s Lordamercy they’re back. They resurface with three new tracks – each of which are strong nominees for Debuts. “Make It Hard” was the office shoo-in. The type of track to instantly make heads knock back and forth like nodding Churchill dog playthings. Jovial polyrhythms galore, the allure of soothing rhodes and all bundled on top of a slick bass underbelly.

Rhythm Section International (@bradleyzero) releases are connected by a certain sound; there is a feeling that brings these records together and makes them cohesive. Rhythm Section has cultivated this Peckham vibe despite the fact that several of its artists are transplants from the opposite side of the world: Dan Kye (aka Jordan Rakei) comes from Brisbane, and Chaos In The CBD relocated from Auckland. The group behind the track we are premiering today also hails from down under.

30/70 (@thirtyseventy)are a collective from Melbourne who fuse jazz, hip-hop, r&b, soul and funk to create striking pieces. Their debut album, « Cold Radish Coma, » incorporates free-jazz experimentalism into lush harmonies alongside the addictive melodies of lead singer Allysha Joy. It truly is an incredible listen.

The band’s new record, « Elevate, » presents a stylistic synthesis with a refined structure. Instead of separate interludes, songs are accompanied with preludes and conclusions reminiscent of Radiohead’s robotic ‘Fitter Happier,’ as well as ad-libbed instrumentals. The opening song, ‘Slangin,’ is a slow-burning cosmic-jazz exploration until its dramatic change-up to distorted funk-rap. The A2 track, ‘Lucid,’ provides a transition, contrasting complex rhythms beneath an arpeggiated synth motif, which feeds perfectly into ‘Nu Spring.’

From the twilight zone of Rhythm Section International comes a new label for 2017: INTERNATIONAL BLACK. This is the offshoot’s 3rd release this year and the machine shows no signs of slowing down.

Bradley Zero’s ear for new talent continues to pay off as we are introduced to yet another young pair of producers, Mallard & LT,  going by the name of ‘J DEEP’.

Mallard, a 19 yo Jazz student  who made a big splash with his debut RS INTL EP, ‘Verte’, returns with a track aimed more squarely at the dancefloor. Although hypnotic and ethereal, it packs a punch, with the arrangement and musicality belying Mallard’s musical training at Trinity College. 

On the flip side, Mallard joins forces with another promising producer who goes by the name ‘LT’ in their collaborational partnership known as J.Deep. Complex jazz chords swim around 909’s to create an elevating techno roller that climbs and climbs only to give way to sparse rave stabs and ecstatic snare patterns.

Tried and tested for the best part of a year, these are 2 serious jams, proven to cause dancefloor frenzy.
