This is an interview with Dr. Fikry Boutros, a Senior Instructor at The American University in Cairo - AUC in the Department of Rhetoric and Composition as well as the Linguistics Department. Since he's very popular among students at AUC, most of them think that they know him, which is not true. Thus, this interview was conducted to uncover his hidden talents and what is still unknown about him.

This interview is produced for JRMC 4460: Audio Production course in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at AUC. It is also a part of a bigger, upcoming project of mine called the Audio Feature, so stay tuned!

The course is taught by Professor Kim Fox and Doaa Abdelghany is the teaching assistant.

Will you recognize the song?!

The Americana Food Court in the American University in Cairo is filled with all different kinds of sounds; these are a few of them.

     1.  Footsteps walking and the door of the food court opening
     2. People conversing 
     3. Someone placing an order at Subway
     4. Burgers being fried and patted down
     5. Order numbers being called for pick-up
     6. Someone grabbing a bag of chips with their meal
     7. People laughing and conversing 
     8. The door of the food court being closed (repeat)

The Sounds of the Americana Food Court

The Americana Food Court in the American University in Cairo is a chaotic experience from the moment you push through its big creaky doors. But each experience somehow seems to be more familiar than the one before it. This is a typical encounter with the Americana Food Court and all of its sounds and smells. 

Transcript:
The most reliable place in A-U-C; the Americana Food Court. Everytime I walk in there I can always expect the same things to happen; I see the same things, I hear the same sounds, I even have the same conversations. Whenever I start to feel a bit peckish, I know exactly where I’m supposed to head. I push through the old, heavy double doors and enter a world of food and chaos. I walk past people laughing with friends others studying, and some just hungrily focused on their food. After the usual indecisiveness, I walk past Butcher’s Burger and hear the clerk calling out order numbers I force myself passed Smiley’s Grill trying to convince myself that the sound and smell of those fries being made don’t have my name written all over them, and head to Subway to place my routine order for a misleadingly healthy sandwich. I grab a bag of chips, confirming the misleading part, and try to find a table that isn’t too crowded. I finish my sandwich and walk towards the large doors, reflexively extending my arm out so that the all too familiar swing of the door doesn’t hit me in the face.I leave the Americana Food Court planning out how I’m gonna bring a home-cooked meal to uni the next day, but deep down knowing that I’ll be right back here tomorrow doing the same, unfailing routine.

The Rundown, Say it with Serien :: epi3

Sex Education is generally a very ‘taboo’ topic everywhere in the world. It’s uncomfortable and often portrayed comically in sit-coms; such as the dreaded moment of coming of age portrayed in ‘the talk’ when parents have a private awkward conversation about sex. I flipped the table, and asked my parents about their experience coming of age, learning about sex, what they think of the present approach, and how they would change it.

This audio feature was produced by Basant Samhout for the Audio Production course at The American University in Cairo, taught by Professor Kim Fox in the Fall semester of 2019. Special thanks to Eman Hafez (mom) and Adel Samhout (dad) for their insightful interviews.

It's Time for 'The Talk'

This audio documentary is a profile about Magda Haroun, the president of the Egyptian Jewish community, and one of the few Egyptian Jews living in Egypt. 

The purpose of this is to document Haroun’s life and to know the aspect she looked at it from since she was a student until she grew up. 

Tarek Saleh, an AUC alumnus, also gives a perspective on the time when Egyptian Jews used to live in Egypt.

Ibrahim Nasir, a Palestinian refugee used his education as a way to rise above all the hardships he faced and become a legendary doctor in one of the best hospitals in the world. His story is told from his point-of-view, his daughter’s, and granddaughter’s.
