Speaking in Jakarta in 2017, Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche distinguishes Buddhism from its cultural containers. The essence of Buddhism is beyond cultural assumptions of serene “holy men” and a paradise-like “nirvana.”. It is to recognize the “raw simple truth” that is with you all the time. This includes the truth that all compounded things are impermanent and that all of our experience is conditional, dependent and therefore unreliable and dream-like. Accepting these truths is what it means to be a Buddhist.

Rinpoche explained how the great enemy to recognizing the truth is our habit, and this habit is fueled by distraction. Cultivating awareness of our direct experience - what we see, hear, taste and touch – is “bad news to our habit” because it confuses our usual chain of distracted thought.

Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche discusses the concept of right intention in Buddhism. This teaching is in English with consecutive translation into Spanish.
Contemplating intention is perhaps the most unique feature of Buddhism. The most basic levels of right motivation are not to harm others and to help them but it is difficult to measure what is harm and what is help. To understand this, we have to consider the notion of self and how our desire to help others may in fact be based on self-clinging. Meditation can calm our minds, leading to a higher chance of having right motivation. But control of the mind alone is just the first step. More important is seeing the truth. Ultimately, what makes motivation right, is whether it is bringing us closer to the truth. Opposing forces such as life and death, and right and wrong, have no solid separate existence but are in union. This is the path to understand, and this is what makes Buddhism different from other religions.
