Channelling his own explorations in search of the soul inside the machine, VRIL draws from the deep well of his live performances to present his third LP for Delsin, Animist. Inside lie 12 pieces which seem to probe at the unknowable distance between tangible consciousness and the astral plane, imbuing even the most seemingly synthetic of materials with a living essence. Given his illustrious back catalogue, it’s no surprise to hear VRIL conjure explicitly electronic music with such loaded emotional impact and seemingly organic animus, but in the process he also toys with the idea of how far the technology’s spiritual potential can reach.

Eric D. Clark sets about a reworking of queer African American poet, Essex Hemphill’s classic poem “In the Life”, embedding it in invisible house music frequencies, but also expanding the sphere of experience by paying tribute to the Gully Queens of Kingston Jamaica and thus reenergising the text it with a freshness all his own.

Bio

Eric D. Clark is an influential multi-disciplinary artist, DJ, and music producer with a career spanning over four decades. He began as a classical and gospel piano prodigy in California, transitioning to DJing in 1981, taking up residencies in San Francisco’s iconic clubs like The Underground and The End Up. Clark quickly made his mark in Paris, performing in diverse venues before regularly visiting Germany in search of new underground dance music.  In the early 90s, Clark co-founded Whirlpool Productions with Justus Köhncke and Hans Nieswandt, gaining international recognition with hits like From Disco to Disco. He pursued solo projects, releasing music on labels like Ladomat and collaborating with artists such as Chaka Khan, Army of Lovers, and TLC.  Eric’s multifaceted career includes teaching at The Städel School in Frankfurt, curating exhibitions, and writing for publications like Spex and Starship Magazine. He has scored campaigns for brands like Chanel, Fila, and Hugo Boss, and presented works at the Centre Pompidou and the Kampnagel festival. His recent projects include DJ residencies, producing music across genres, and curating artistic shows. In 2022, Clark and Whirlpool Productions were honored with the Holger Czukay Prize for their career contributions to music.

The original version of the song "UV" was released on the legendary label Ostgut Ton. In consultation with them I am now re-releasing the new edit of the track that has been a big part of my path that goes on til today. File available on my Bandcamp profile.
