Firstly a big thanks to Shane of Harmful If Swallowed for agreeing to do do this male duet. It’s a first for me and probably for him, so a very interesting concept. It’s been a song that’s been hanging around a while just waiting for the right type of vocalist to agree. I am a great admirer of Shane’s work because of his fine lyrics and interpretations of real life. 
The song Elephant In The Room was wrote over five years ago with my son Owen  who would of been around 18 at the time. He had got into playing guitar and dabbling in song writing so my role was helping him with melody and lyrics. 
It’s a song I always thought had great potential and as I wasn’t that active in music myself at the time only a raw acoustic version existed.
This version is what we used as a sketch and Noobly transformed it into a full blown production. Seriously Noobly is a real talent and absolute pleasure to work with so respect to him.
There as been slight lyric changes but the melody is the same.
The song is about to close friends sitting in one of their living rooms in silence. There is an elephant in the room for both of them because a serious matter is not being discussed and neither of them are opening the conversation. The one  as done something really bad to the other so use your imagination.
The conversation is only happening inside their heads so hence a male duet of thoughts.

Since this track seems to be well received, I would like to share some secrets. I used the following for this:

Sonuscore - The Orchestra Complete 3. Here I loaded the instrument "Grand Piano Lid Closed" on its own sound track for the melody and staccato chords.

Spitfire Audio - Originals Epic Choir. As with the piano, I opened two instances and recorded separately on two sound tracks. On the first, the "ladies" sopranos & altos: short staccato syllables, and on the second, the men's tenor & basses: short staccato syllables. On both I experimented with different expressions and dynamics controlled by the modulation wheel via controller. The ladies are more dominant here.

Nexus 4 - Hollywood 2 Core Library. Here I loaded the Strings and Choir preset from the "Vocal/Choir" category. I adjusted the attack a bit to get a smoother sound. It supports the sung staccatos of the choir from Spitfire Audio as a soundscape.
Then, last but not least, I used Sonuscore's The Orchestra Complete 3 again for the horns and loaded the "Horns of Hell" preset. I reduced the internal reverb a bit for this and also worked with dynamics and expression via mod wheel here.

Since I am quite lazy when it comes to drum pattern programming: The drums and percussion are ready-made samples and come from KeepForest, HighLife and other sample forges.
All in all, there are six instrument tracks loaded here in FL Studio and three audio tracks. There's also an EQ, compressor, and delay and reverb on the master. That's it!

The spark that ignited this composition: Heart Of The Andes by Frederic Edwin Church....

"This painting was inspired by Church's second trip to South America in the spring of 1857. During his nine-week trip through Ecuador, Church made numerous sketches, and many surviving watercolors and drawings contain elements from this work. The painting was publicly unveiled on April 27, 1859, at Lyrique Hall, 756 Broadway, in New York. It was subsequently moved to the gallery of the Studio Building on Tenth Street and illuminated in a darkened room with gas jets hidden behind silver reflectors. This felt like the best way to leave things at the end of the 2nd Act. Peggy has broken free. She says "the Perscripion is, Get the fuck out" and that was part of the inspiration. But what really got this song going was someone throwing away an amp and it being garbage day in Miss Bestie's town and Hurtful Junez found a working amp on garbage day. Such a cool way to get inspired to write music!!! 

Letting go of toxic waste in your life is very freeing. Sometimes people are the toxic waste that need to be removed in order to start heading in the right direction.
