Pauline's family journey to England from Jamaica and how she joined the NHS.

I think the fact that we're recognised as…. - the contribution that black people have made to the NHS, I think it's just - it makes me feel proud. It makes me feel proud to work for the NHS. It makes me feel proud to be a black woman.

My grandparents' heritage is from Jamaica. They came over in the late 1950s, my grandfather worked on the trains, and my grandmother worked in the NHS as a nurse.  It was my nan who told me about working in the NHS.  I started on an apprenticeships and have been here every since.

I've been in the Trust since the early 80s. I started as a domestic. My mum was a nurse. So I thought I'd like to go that way. My mom was born in India, a place called Nazirabad, it's now Pakistan. My dad was born in Smethwick in Birmingham. I'm not too sure how my mom and dad met because they never discussed how they met. But that's all I know. I was born in the military and lived in Malaysia in Hong Kong Singapore, and then we moved to Germany.

My colleagues call me Zaman, but my villagers call me Komo, which is my very favourite name, my childhood name. I am a hospital chaplain for local six hospitals in Birmingham, including Queen Elizabeth, City and Sandwell, Heartlands, Good Hope, and Solihull. I work to support patient, staff, patients' family members and carers. I enjoy it, because my small involvement, make a change immediately.

My mum was an axillary nurse for many years at a mental health and learning disabilities hospital and also worked in private residential care. It was my mum’s career that got me interested into social care and health and eventually a job in the NHS.

I was born in London. At the age of six my  family relocated back to Cameroon,  which is in between Central and West Africa. I returned to Europe around the age of 16, and I ended up in Berlin, in Germany, and that's where I ended up going to medical school.
