Alice Russell is natural, pure natural talent, a natural presence, a force of nature. Whether on a big stage with her 16 piece band, charming a crowd of 4000 into staying out dancing in the rain (as she did at Montreal Jazz Festival) or rocking out an intimate club set with a stripped down 6 piece band, she’s a singer who demands attention. Unfazed by taking to the spotlight after a sober Amy Winehouse or joining Roy Ayres live for ‘Everybody Loves The Sunshine’, there’s no wonder her powerful soul voice has attracted rave reviews from numerous national and international publications and praise from fans as diverse as Gilles Peterson, David Byrne, Dennis Coffey, Massive Attack’s Daddy G, and Groove Armada. 

Alice has also won over a whole brace of producers – lending her strong, emotional tones to releases by Mr Scruff, Quantic and Nostalgia 77, the latter pairing producing the ‘Seven Nation Army’ cover that demolished clubs for years. But following her first release 'Under The Munka Moon' it’s her records with longtime producer and bandleader TM Juke that she’s best known for. From their debut album ‘My Favourite Letters' through to 2008’s live-tinged ‘Pot Of Gold’, they have made some of the most arresting blues soul since the glory days of Aretha. 

“We’ve both got a very open approach to writing songs,” she explains of the prolific relationship. “And we both like so many different types of music whereas some people are more purist. Our influences run from Sarah Vaughan to Bach, Kate Bush to Arvo Part, and J Dilla to Alice Coltrane. We love everything from dirty, squelchy dub step to old school soul. We nudge each other in the right directions.”

The direction they’re nudging each other in right now is towards the synthesizer rack. A love of Prince’s upbeat ‘Dirty Mind’ album and tracks like ‘Controversy’ are leading to a new sound for the upcoming album.
“We’re writing and recording as we speak,” Alice exclaims. “It’s sounding like a cross between ‘My Favourite Letters’ and something much newer. Obviously my voice is there, which brings out that soulful, emotional sound, but there are a lot more synths. It’s a bit more punk electro soul. Yeah!”
If you’ve seen Alice perform live recently you might not be surprised; her December show at the Forum in London saw her take to the stage with her traditional horn section backed up with synths, while smaller gigs have showcased the pacey songs with a four piece set up that sounds rocky. As much as she loves being in the studio there’s something special about Alice let loose on an audience.

“Being on stage is more instant,” she admits, suggesting the reason why she limited herself to just three takes on each song on ‘Pot Of Gold’. “I like things when they’re quite free. In the studio it can be like when you know someone’s taking your photo. Writing in the studio is amazing but when you’re doing takes it can be a bit daunting, but also really exciting. Live you can’t take it back – you’ve got to go all out there.”

It has led to some great experiences, like when she stayed on in Japan to visit the village where the promoter was from: almost like a 50s teen movie, a deal was struck where Alice would have free reign of the hotel for her stay if she did a gig. 
“Of course we said yes,” Alice says with delight. “Babies and grandmas all turned up and there we were with a makeshift sound system thrown together out of amps and speakers. It was one of the most heart warming gigs I’ve ever done.”
Other live highlights include singing with The Roots in Philadelphia, while recording has seen her sing on Talking Heads leader David Byrne’s recent LP. Surely belting out the intensely emotional songs must get a bit tiring. Apparently not.

“It’s a great emotional release,” Alice smiles. “And sometimes makes you feel really high, especially when you’re singing the high notes. If you’re feeling rubbish and everything else feels like it’s going wrong you feel better if you have a good singsong.

Karaoke Kalk is a record label founded in 1997 in Cologne. The name comes from the „Köln-Kalk“ district where the label started out. Over the past 25 years the label has amounted a superb catalog totaling well over 120 releases by a dazzling array of artists spanning the broadest possible spectrum of musical output.

Some of the most notable musicians to have released on Kalk include Scottish post-jazz pianist Bill Wells, To Rococo Rot bassist Mapstation aka Stefan Schneider, Static aka classically trained drummer Hanno Leichtmann, tireless musical activist Guido Möbius and the meister of prepared-piano Hauschka. Of all the acts to appear on KK, the later has undoubtedly reached the widest audience, with continued success and international acclaim, it was Kalk that first brought Hauschka's unique style to the world. While between them Bill Wells and Stefan Schneider have worked with everyone from Aidan Moffat and Barbara Morgenstern to Mahar Shalal Hash Baz and Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Other well established acts that have released on Kalk include the electronic pop duo Donna Regina and the English post-jazz ensemble Dakota Suite.
Of course, besides all these well known names Karaoke Kalk is very much about supporting new talent and bringing to light fantastic new artists who might not otherwise get a break. And so the label is proud to support young artists which recent releases by the likes of Emanuele Errante, Toulouse Low Trax, Roman and J.R.Plankton goes to show.

In 2004 the label relocated from Cologne to Berlin where label head Thorsten Lütz aka DJ Strobocop is extremely active with residencies and regular appearances at some of the best clubs around town. The label is now firmly established as one of the finest the „Musical Capital“ of Europe has to offer. A year later, Karaoke Kalk spawned the Kalk Pets sublabel again proving the Kalk's ongoing support of the clubscene with a focus on remix 12“s. So far the sublabel has released over 20 vinyl Eps with contributions from the likes of DeWalta, Paul Frick (from Brandt, Brauer, Frick), Daniel Meteo, Atom TM and Chica Paula. Kalk Pets proves the labels undying love for the vinyl format and affinity with traditional djing and ever changing club landscape. Since 2006 the label has had its own publisher too - Karaoke Kalk Musikverlag – empowering its artists to retain control of their rights. 

Karaoke Kalk release wonderful electronic and indie sounds beyond the cliches: label boss Thorsten Lütz likes to sit on the fence, creating his own niche for music beyond all the fleeting trends and typical media categorizations. It is one of the few genuinely eclectic labels out there, covering an astonishingly wide range of genres encompassing everything from ambient and indie to electronic, experimental and singer-songwriter. It's one of the true joys of Karaoke Kalk that one just never knows that the label is going to release next: it could go in any direction. The fact is no matter what style of music the label selects, its always of the highest standard and never fails to surprise and delight with each new release.

Music was always Lewis’s blood as his grandfather was a master on the piano & Organ this is where his interest all started. At a young age he started experimenting with ways in which to make his own music. He is no stranger to being behind the decks as he started to play around with DJ-ing at the tender age of 12. In the years to come Lewis was a household name in his hometown Durban, playing on some of the biggest stages and holding residencies at Durban’s finest clubs.

Lewis then relocated to Cape Town in 2016 where he began crafting his own signature sound within the minimal and Techno scene, with many of his releases reaching Beatport’s Top 100 Charts and being played numerous times by the pioneers of the industry.

Lewis. offers a complex blend of deep and dark Minimal Techno, hard hitting baselines and powerful synth design drives his sound. This young artist is quickly gaining popularity through out various city's in the world. Caracas, early 1980s. A radio flickers on and crackles the introduction to John Paul Young's "Love is in the Air". For one boy, the moment marks the beginning of a life-long love affair with music. 
The pages on a wall calendar fly off in quick succession as the young man, a one Argenis Brito, delves into the world of performance. We see him pick up a bass guitar, adjust a microphone to capture his voice and suit up to front band after phenomenally successful band. But it's at the tail end of this formation, leading up to the turn of the century, that we witness Brito finally come into his own.
Latin, hot-blooded and with decidedly tropical tendencies, our protagonist tries his hand at the bleeps and blops upon which club culture is built—thus becoming a key figure in the cross-pollination between techno music and Latin rhythms. A new underground sound is born, with Brito at the helm. Think Mambotur, Señor Coconut, Los Refrescos and many other rum-fueled collaborations held within the confines of slick studios. These are our main character's playgrounds.
Those playgrounds have long since extended beyond the recording sessions and into some of the world's greatest DJ booths—from Europe to Asia and all of the Americas. Our storied musician and entertainer considers himself on a never-ending quest to learn and delight in equal parts. Which means this story never ends, but is destined always "to be continued..."
These days, Argenis Brito's most impressive musical experiences don't often include radios. But you can bet that when the Venezuelan native is behind a booth working his magic, nobody can deny that love is in the air.
