Chapter 1 - All Aboard

When his father dies and leaves him a small fortune, Stede can finally fulfil his lifelong dream of travelling from Paris to Istanbul aboard the Venice-Simplon-Orient Express, with perhaps a chargeable caviar or two on board.

But his trip of a lifetime is somewhat complicated by the presence of the train's resident pianist, Ed Teach, who quickly steals Stede's heart as they travel the breadth of a continent. Even as every mile they cover brings them closer together, they must reckon with the knowledge that their arrival at their destination will inevitably force them apart.

[Day 8 of the 2024 OFMD Advent Calendar]

Ed and his workmates and other small queer businesses have been having their shared end-of-year holiday celebration at the same venue for the last five years. It's a bowling club which hosts all sorts of events, from barefoot lawn bowls to holiday parties to weddings.

Stede recently cancelled the wedding he was supposed to have at the same venue, but is yet to receive a refund of his booking fee. He's turned up to the venue in person to demand his refund, coincidentally while Ed's holiday party is happening.

It's summer in so-called Australia, and there's something in the air. Is it the gift of love or just an incoming summer thunderstorm?
