Program note
The Berlin Senate Department for Science, Research and Culture awarded two composition commissions under the title “Trautonium 2000” on the occasion of Oskar Sala's 90th birthday. The call for proposals was aimed at composers of different music genres and ultimately went to me and the Berlin sound artist Christina Kubisch.
Since it was not certain whether there would be anyone who could play the trautonium, I decided to write a piece for chamber ensemble and pre-recorded tape with edited sounds of the trautonium.
The composition follows in the main a written, verbally formulated sketch, which I made for the competition.
The first movement as a whole could be described as more flowing and atmospheric, the second as rhythmic and burlesque (a bit reminiscent of Oskar Sala's Caprices).
I treated the trautonium as an equal ensemble instrument and tried to keep the technical requirements to a minimum. The second movement dispenses with live trautonium and makes do with a tape that consists exclusively of electronically processed sounds of the trautonium.
The composition was premiered in December 2001 by the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin at the Academy of Arts. The mixtur trautonium was played by Andrea Neumann, who specialises in inside piano.

Programmnotiz
Die Berliner Senatsverwaltung für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Kultur vergab unter dem Titel „Trautonium 2000“ zwei Kompositionsaufträge anläßlich des 90. Geburtstags von Oskar Sala. Die Ausschreibung richtete sich an Komponisten unterschiedlicher Musikgenres und ging schließlich an mich und die Berliner Klangkünstlerin Christina Kubisch.
Da es nicht sicher war, ob es jemanden geben würde, der das Trautonium spielen kann, beschloss ich, ein Stück für Kammerensemble und Zuspielung mit den bearbeiteten Klängen des Trautoniums zu schreiben.
Die Komposition folgt im Wesentlichen einem schriftlich fixierten, verbal formulierten Kompositionsentwurf, den ich für die Ausschreibung erstellt habe.
Dabei könnte man den ersten Satz insgesamt als eher klanglich-athmosphärisch, den zweiten als rhythmisch-burlesk beschreiben (ein bißchen an Oskar Sala’s Capricen angelehnt).
Das Trautonium habe ich als gleichberechtigtes Ensembleinstrument behandelt und dabei versucht, die technischen Anforderungen auf ein Minimum zu beschränken.
Der zweite Satz verzichtet ganz auf live gespieltes Trautonium und begnügt sich mit einem Zuspielband, das ausschließlich aus elektronisch bearbeiteten Klängen des Trautoniums besteht.
Die Komposition wurde im Dezember 2001 vom Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin in der Akademie der Künste uraufgeführt. Das Mixtur-Trautonium wurde von Andrea Neumann gespielt, die sich auf Innenklavier spezialisiert hat.
