Future is a Difficult Word

A conversation with Anastasiia Manuliak, curator and cultural manager, Head of Visual Arts at the Ukrainian Institute in Kyiv, Ukraine, and representative of the Zapravka residency programme. 

She shares how Russia’s full-scale invasion has reshaped Ukraine’s cultural landscape: from new institutions and the increasing public demand for culture, to artists redefining their roles in times of war. From preserving memory through art to interventions on the battlefield, Anastasiia shows how creativity and resistance intertwine.

Speaking from a young artist’s perspective, she stresses that for emerging artists, war is their only reality—their only context. And when it comes to the future, she reminds us how uncertain that word has become: for many, only the present feels certain as the conflict continues.
