Two worlds, photography and Sound Art mixed together.

Analog photography, used as a means of orientation within a new collective human condition, intimately reveals a vitality forced into domestic environments where presences and absences interpenetrate and coexist.

The Frames
Photographs taken using an analog point-and-shoot camera loaded with 400 ISO Kentmere black and white film. The entire process of shooting, developing the negatives and acquiring the images was performed by the artist in his own laboratory.

The Music
7 short compositions based on repetition were born as a function of the image. The geometries and the superimpositions of the different planes intersect and interpenetrate, showing a vitality not yet considered. The music therefore tries to tell what is hidden but which somehow re-emerges, generating a loop of different states of being.

Claudio Rosa, visual artist, originally from Sant’Antioco, carries on his double research on visual perception and on the reuse of objects of mass consumption characterized by a strong geometry. His art seeks the spontaneity of a child's play but does so through a methodical, and even obsessive, semantic processing, apparently cold but deeply linked to childhood.

SANĀTANA aka Marco Salaris is a musician born in Sardinia in 1988. His music has its roots in Noise and Drone Music, developing and finding new trajectories more akin to Electroacoustic and avant-garde music. His creative process is articulated around the improvisation, listening and sound processing practices, typical of Electronic Music. In 2019 he released his first solo album "SANATANA" for the SUPRANU Records label.

A recent astronomical event was, quite obviously, at the root of this odd musical piece. I accidentally came across a few posts on the social networks conveying a certain degree of confidence in this astrological occurrence, but I honestly couldn't afford to share their flaunted optimism. I couldn't recall any idyllic connection between Jupiter and Saturn, so I thought that a recording of an acapella singing performed by my wife about 10 years ago might have best fit my initial sonic atmosphere. It was an improvised sung rendition of an Arabic poem composed by Said Bin Ahmad al-Busaidi (d. 1803, feel free to check https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Said_bin_Ahmad for a short bio) that seems to have been used as lyrics by several modern Middle Eastern artists. I thought of it as a suitable fictional outlet for a broken hearted Saturn.
On the other hand, my everyday life subsequently offered me a chance to observe this "great" conjunction from a socio-political perspective in the country where I'm living in. I had the opportunity to take a field audio recording of a riot that took place not so far from my home in mid-January (feel free to check https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4dI90RFsEF4 for a short account of the current situation), and I thought that it would perfectly give expression both to the disappointment of local people against those who have been managing political power since the so-called Arab Spring in 2011 and to the sympathetic, balanced reaction shown by law enforcement and the government itself. In order to sound politically correct, I thought it was appropriate to give voice to the establishment as well, to "Jupiter" if you like, so I googled around and found an awesome video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpJVq78A4Y0) starring the guy who's been behind the scenes of this brilliant democratic experience in Northern Africa during the last 10 years. I extrapolated a few audio samples from his declarations and used them in the first sequence of this piece.
I finally added a few instrumental and vocal parts, then I processed all of the audio recordings through a heavy, meticulous sound design work. Hope you'll appreciate the result.

This piece was made for the Disquiet Junto challenge #477:  Flying Blind, the main purpose being to perform a substantial portion of a track without seeing what you're doing.  So...

I set up a stereo pair of mics and a few instruments on a rolling desk in front of me, set up a looper in my DAW, hit record, covered my face by wearing a hoodie backwards, and started playing these instruments with my hands while listening to the loop build up in my headphones.  The instruments I used were:
-steel tongue drum
-kalimba
-empty gallon-sized plastic jug
-children's metallophone

You can also hear my children playing and talking, which was not entirely intentional, but kind of neat.  They get worked into the loops and it turns into a different experience entirely.  After recording, I chopped the performance into four parts (one for each instrument) and processed and arranged them separately.  This is the result.
