Composition written for the Air Force's 70th birthday in 2017. This is a live performance by the USAF Band of Mid-America from October 12, 2017 at Andrews College in Berrien Springs, Michigan, which I was honored to conduct. 

This work was created as a request for an Air Force-themed "companion piece" to Robert Jager's "Esprit de Corps" (which uses the Marine's Hymn as the source of its melodic material). Since Jager was my music composition and theory teacher at Tennessee Tech University, I discussed my plans for this work with him, shared my progress along the way, and sought his guidance as I had done so many times in the past. There are two quotes from his "Esprit de Corps" that you might hear in "Blue Horizons."

Overall this piece is an homage to the Air Force's musical heritage and also to Jager himself; there's also a bit of "chase music" inspired by John Williams toward the end - always a fun style, and since he's part of our Air Force Band heritage I thought it was appropriate. You can hear bits of "Off We Go" in here, and you Air Force types may also hear "A Toast to the Host," "Lord, Guard and Guide," and one quote each of "Air Force Blue" and "Those Magnificent Men."

I was honored when Mr. Russ Kramer, Director of Bands at Mason City High School (IA)approached me with the idea of creating a work for band to celebrate the construction of a new space in which artistic and civic programs would be presented in their community. After
discussions, faithful supporters O. Jay and Pat Tomson commissioned a composition for the Mason City High School Symphonic Band to commemorate the opening of the new performance
hall at Mason City High School.

The first movement of the suite, Leaning Forward, opens with intensity and does not let up as it presents its themes. Harmonic choices and rhythmic elements were all designed to propel the music in a manner reflective of the energies of the visionary leaders behind the construction of the new facility, as well as the spirit of those students, faculty and community members that would enliven the auditorium in the years ahead.

Looking Back, the second movement, offers music conducive to contemplating the proud heritage of Mason City, as well as its high school and storied music program.

The final movement, Lifting Spirits, captures the exuberance within the school and community, bringing the suite to a joyous conclusion.

Program Note:
A Song for Tomorrow is a composition that is very near and dear to my heart. The piece was composed in memory of my friend Jonathan Foreman, who tragically died in September of 2018. Jonathan, his older brother David, and their family and I were close when we were in high school and so his death hit me very hard; as well as the family, and the students and faculty of Arlington High School. For his funeral, the room was packed with Arlington High School teachers, students, and alumni who knew Jonathan. Arlington High School was always a family and so it was amazing to see how many people came out to support and say their goodbyes. After the funeral service, I felt a deep pulling on my heart that I need to write something for David and the Foreman family, as a tribute to Jonathan. I pondered what to do for months until I was able to come up with a title and an idea for the piece. The title of the composition, A Song for Tomorrow, is inspired by a Latin phrase that was printed on Jonathan’s funeral program. This phrase read “Cras alius dies est”, which means “Tomorrow is Another Day”. 

The song is meant to embody who Jonathan was, and provide hope and comfort to the family and friends who knew him for the days to come. The song features a chorale that I came up with that comes back in different forms throughout the piece. Jonathan was a trumpet player and so I wrote an off-stage trumpet solo that is played (which represents him), as well as a trumpet section feature that builds the climax of the piece. The piece explores different conflictions and dissonances, until coming to a peaceful resolution. This was incredibly hard for me to write and so I wanted to make sure that I put everything in my heart into this work. I hope that this piece can be comforting and provide peace to all who have lost someone close to them. I hope it gives them the strength to carry on through the days ahead, for every tomorrow that comes.
