The May Day Cycle

Fortunately it isn’t so difficult these days to explore some rare music from Africa. Just have a look at those fine reissues and compilations which showcase a wide range of that particular funky music that only can originate from the black continent. Just check out our Reissue Label Special from 2011 to get the idea. For this edition of UV Funk it’s Gunnars turn to pick out some beautiful tracks and talk a bit about the artists. He focussed on Afrobeat, Afrofunk and Afrodisco from Nigeria’s 70s.

Soul Food Boogaloo

When it comes to dub music, fans of Jamaican reggae are likely familiar with the handful of legendary full-length LPs by giants of the genre like King Tubby, Lee “Scratch” Perry and Scientist.  Great albums like “King Tubby’s Meets Rockers Uptown” (King Tubby & Augustus Pablo) and “Super Ape” (Lee Perry) have enjoyed frequent reissues over the five decades since their releases, making spotting them in the reggae section of your local record store more or less an inevitability.  Much less visible and accessible however are the thousands of dub cuts from the 70s and early 80s released on the b-side of Jamaican 7” singles.  Known as “version sides” (and often simply labeled as “version”), these b-sides contain some of the greatest music to ever come off the tiny island.  For me, one of the joys of collecting Jamaican records over the years has been discovering killer version sides that often end up getting more time under my needle than the A-sides.  “Version Vault Vol. 1” features 21 version-sides from the Expanders Sound System crates. Sir Scott Mack's 45 Finds & Favorites of 2011

When the sun comes up over Dresden, one man is already on his bike riding to one to three flea markets to check out if there are some precious little vinyl diamonds. This man could be @cover-1, one of the most diligent diggers and DJs in the city. Over the years he made a name for himself for playing soulful Disco und House music that you should know but won’t even heard of before. When he is on holidays he tends to go to countries in which those unsung musical heroes were or are located. For instance, the islands of the West Indies to whose varied Soca, Disco and Funk scene he established a longtime love affair. At least, you can hear that in every note in his mix for UV Funk. 1) Tell us a bit about yourself and your record collection

SoulBrigada was initiated 2009 by Alex D. & Fabio V. as a platform for own events in the trijunction on the lake of constance in the south of germany. Alex also started to spin records on this events and abroad. In 2011 the first studio collaboration leads to an exclusive vinyl only release with their remix of a track by Gilles Peterson's Havana Cultura Band on Poets Club Records.
Due to time time constraints and spatial distance Fabio had to withdraw from this project a little bit so that Alex runs nowadays SoulBrigada mainly. Further tracks was released in 2013 on 7inch on english label KAT45 Records and the own 2016-founded Matasuna Records. The focus is now on the label work and spreading the Matasuna vibe on festivals and clubs across europe.
The record collection is approx. 1500 records – one third 7inches and two third 10“ and 12“. I collect a broad range of different records from all over the world. I also like to buy records on my vacations like in Japan, California, Greece, Portugal etc. So for me my collection is more than only music – it's also a memory to special moments of my life. Most of the time when i put out a vinyl from the collection these memories came back to mind.

2) 45/7 is all about celebrating the 7". Can you tell us a bit about what you love about the format.

It's more challenging to play with 7inches: on one hand the mixing of the tracks because there's no long in- or outros like on an extended 12“ Disco Single. On the other hand you have to be focused a lot on the mix because of the short play time of the 7“. But i like this kind of challange.
And also the size and weight of the record bag is optimal for trips abroad.

3) One hour of vinyl goodness... can you talk us through your selection for your 45/7 mix?

I was influenced by Djs & Diggers like Paul Nice, Mr. Scruff, Kenny Dope or DJ Muro which couldn't be categorized in a specific genre and suprised again and again with their musical taste. It would be a loss to be restricted to a certain genre because there's so incredible good music out there. This is also the philosophy of SoulBrigada: as the name associates, Soulmusic is obligatory but there isn't a limit to this genre – the main point is the SOUL in the music.
So this exclusive 7inch vinyl only mix reflects excellent the musical bandwith of the SoulBrigada sound. It's ranging from Reggae, Calypso, Brazil, Tropical, Orienta l, Asia over to Funk, Breaks, Boogie towards Dubby Disco.
