Mysterious World

Wooden Wand's first album a solo artist is influenced in equal parts by legendary hedonists Fleetwood Mac and West Coast sad sack Judee Sill.  The intention to create something timeless and ageless informs each note this music, for better or worse. Conceived during a sabbatical in Los Angeles, Harem Of The Sundrum & The Witness Figg finds our man in search of the inherent muses of The Pacific and what he refers to as "the other California sound" (e.g. Gene Clark's No Other, John Phillips' John, Wolfking of LA, Skip Spence's Oar and David Crosby's If I Could Only Remember My Name).  Over the course of ten compositions, Wooden Wand (AKA James Jackson Toth) delivers a sullen yet highly exploratory batch of songs brimming with cosmic spirituality, dark optimism and traces of folk blues.

La Mecánica Popular takes to the night for a much anticipated follow-up to their critically acclaimed, self-titled album. This special edition single features a natural modification of their signature psychedelic style – a time capsule of 1970s Afro-Peruvian roots gone American Rock & Soul. Noche Triler (Thriller) takes the form of an uptempo instrumental stunner, a unique combination of styles from guaracha and cumbión, and a refreshingly thrilling flip of Michael Jackson’s iconic masterpiece. Already a staple in the band’s live performances, Móntame En La Tormenta (Riders On The Storm) transforms the Doors’ cowboy-jazz road saga into a brilliantly versioned Amazonian cumbia, a beautifully dark and shadowy trip into the heart of la selva.

Enderby’s Room is fiddle player Dan Mayfield, once from rural Lincolnshire, but he has now found home living in London. His folk tinged songs reflect on his traditional folk upbringing. Mayfield has played violin for many artists including Daniel Johnston, Darren Hayman, The Wave Pictures,  Allo Darlin’ and the Belles of London City morris dancers.

Over the past ten years he has gently built up a collection of his own songs, which he performs with his band Enderby’s Room. The name comes from an Anthony Burgess character called Mr Enderby who composed his prose inside the toilet. The band’s make up has been constantly evolving; around 30 different individuals have been a part of Enderby’s Room over the last decade, before settling on the current 5 piece lineup.

Enderby’s Room’s sound features a Victorian pedal harmonium, together with French horn, double bass, ukulele, guitar and percussion. 

The artwork for the record was created by Johnny Voss whose style involves using a continuous single pen stroke to create his illustrations. 

Lakeside, the first single from their forthcoming debut album, is one of the first songs that Mayfield composed, taken from the perspective of someone longing to be with someone they can’t be with. There are themes of nature and listening which also feature throughout the rest of music on the forthcoming album. Mayfield is joined by Emma Winston (Deerful, Owl & Mouse) on vocals in this lamenting duet. 

As well as Enderby’s Room, Mayfield set up School of Noise which encourages young people to be creative with sound, using unusual noise making and sound sculpting machines. This project has seen him take workshops to the Green Man and End of the Road festivals as well as the Southbank Centre, Museum of London, Great Ormond Street Hospital and primary schools around the country.

VULP-0013 is Natural Snow Buildings' first release of 2010, the free-for-download double LP The Centauri Agent! On part one, the 41 minute "Our man from Centauri" sets the stage, a cosmic, sprawling opener with themes that continue on into "The accidental remote viewer", before fizzling out into static. Part two is comprised of nine beautiful and intense tracks (particular stand-outs including "The Psychic Circle/Uchronia", "The storm of resurrection", and "Solar flares"). Lovely and intricately woven as ever, while frequently heading off into new and challenging sonic territory, Mehdi and Solange have created yet another very special work of musical art with The Centauri Agent!
