In Lee Ann Roberts’ hands, even the hardest techno can have subtlety and soul. The Amsterdam-based, South African-born artist has become a prominent force in the global techno scene thanks to her fierce determination and vibrant creative touch. She leads with her own NowNow label – a self-reliant platform which nods to the South African colloquialism meaning ‘soon’, a call to surrender to the moment and follow where the music takes you.

It’s a mantra she’s lived by as her career has sharply risen, debuting on Spanish label Suara with ‘Miyamoto’ and instantly scoring number two on Beatport’s Hard Techno chart. She’s simultaneously been growing NowNow with her own productions dropping alongside remixes from verified legends like D.A.V.E. The Drummer, Jay Clarke and Dense & Pika.

Roberts’ first break came via her own show on Cape Town’s Mutha FM before she travelled to LA and found a home at legendary Hollywood nightclub AVALON. From Secret Solstice in Iceland to Caprices Festival, BPM alongside Jeff Mills, DGTL and Verknipt in Amsterdam to countless other gigs across the world, Roberts has continually progressed, road-testing her tracks in the pressure-cooker situations she finds herself in every weekend.

The vitality in Roberts’ sound undoubtedly comes from her broad outlook, inspired as much by the revolutionary misfits of rock as the visionary pioneers of electronic music. Her attraction to unusual and distinctive qualities in the music she makes and plays all add up to one of the most exciting forces in contemporary techno – a commanding presence that demands your full attention.

SUMIA is a young promising international talent from the techno scene of Istanbul where she has also found the techno music record label Volx Community & Records. The talented 23-year-old has been able to assure the backing of number of reputable prominent producers in a short time.  Despite her young age, her hard work, passion and dedication for music let her collaborated with numerous record labels from other nations on some of the tracks she released in her debut year. She quotes her music as  "expressing my emotions “. She also states that her tracks are musical narratives for her vision. Whether its dark and pounding , or happy and uplifting, they have one thing in common, which is the through a magical journey to whole new reality. Raw synths, deep vocals which she records by herself are some of the key elements of her sound.

Strongly shaped by the raw and forward-leaning sound of 90’s Techno, Milan based artist Alarico Zucchi started his journey into electronic music in 2015 making his way through clubs as a DJ while learning the art of music production. 

The inauguration of ‘Alarico’ occurred in 2019 after previously exploring several sub-genres of Techno. The alias was formed as a statement to showcase a style that was personal to him. Personal in a way that he became captivated within the patterns and structures of his own sound. So-much-so that his multiple our long podcasts solely consisting of his own material made him stand out from a whole host of young and promising producers and DJs. 

Known for fast paced rhythms and kinky grooves he has released music consistently since his debut in 2020 on Joton’s imprint “Newrhytmic Records”. Shortly after he launched his own vinyl imprint “Katana Records”, which showcases the more mental and introverted side of his idea of Techno. He certainly cemented his rank in today’s Techno landscape through releases on Matrixxman’s highly acclaimed “The Grid”, Token Records and sees a bright future with a forthcoming release on SHDW & Obscure Shape’s newest endeavour “Mutual Rytm”. 

Alarico continues to position himself as a unique music lover, exploring the depths and possibilities of sound. He stands for permanently pushing boundaries and stirring this attitude with his background of Hip Hop and Japanese culture.

Answer Code Request (@answercoderequest) has long since mastered the art of mixing up the physical the with cerebral. His broken, industrial-tinged techno drums are powerful enough to have made him a long-time Berghain resident, while his harmonic pads make a lasting impact on your mind. While releasing on the likes of Ostgut Ton, Dolly Deluxe and Monkeytown Records, he has also established his own ACR label and never fails to blur boundaries between sub-genres whenever he steps out with a new sound or set.

He pulls no punches on this week's mix which is a broad showcase of his ability to thread together many different strains of techno and beyond into a coherent whole. There's everything from transcendental and linear rollers to dubby bangers, twitchy rave anthems blissed out deep space minimalism via party starting piano house. It's fun and functional in equal measure and is the sound of a DJ very much in full flow.
