Chance At Love (Jose & Alexis)

Whenever I hear a rhythmic noise like the sound of this downspout, or a windshield wiper, or ceiling fan, I always find myself filling out the beat in my head. So, for this submission, I decided to cut up the sample in to “calls” and did about four takes of “responses” on my drums. After that, I went back in Ableton, chose my favorite parts and added a random effect on each section, automating each one on and off.

Regardless of how I feel about the resulting recording, the important thing about this track is that I really, truly had fun making it. It was the first time in as long as I can remember that I started laughing out loud playing my drums.

Nick is joined by RTE and Racing TV broadcaster Jane Mangan to discuss the latest news from around the racing world. They lead with Saturday's Irish Oaks, and are joined by trainer Ralph Beckett who confirms that Bluestocking will take on the home team with Colin Keane aboard. Wicked

Johnny’s on the Water was learned from the singing of Appalachian folk singer Jean Ritchie (1922 - 2015). It twists the archetypal story of a woman left behind by a sailor, the singer rejecting grief and finding empowerment: ‘if he can live without me, I can live without him’. This line became the heart of our arrangement. 

We created this arrangement in residence at Snape Maltings in 2022. In slowing down the tempo, destabilising the rhythm, and replacing Ritchie’s sparse dulcimer accompaniment with an ensemble of modular synths, guitars and affected strings, we explore the way that the open sea warps our understanding of time and distance. The trumpet solo was played by Lissie Daly, a tireless campaigner for women in brass.

Nick is joined by David Yates from the Daily Mirror to reflect on today's news from the world of Horseracing. First they pay tribute to Keagan Kirkby, the point to point rider and key member of Paul Nicholls's team, who was killed in a fall on Sunday. They reflect on the action from the Dublin Racing Festival, and hear a detailed review of the stable's Grade One 8-timer from assistant David Casey. Also on today's show, Nick remembers Hardy Eustace in the company of Conor O'Dwyer, while Total Performance Data's Will Duff-Gordon brings news of a groundbreaking data partnership, and the PJA's Dale Gibson airs his grievances at the amount of evening fixtures in February for the jockeys' workload.

Carlos reflects on his decision as well as giving an update on some of his stable stars for the year ahead. Tom is joined by broadcaster Rishi Persad and Rishi, who sits on the Flat Pattern Committee, talks of disappointment at both the City of York Stakes and the Long Distance Cup being refused Group 1 status. Daragh Ó Conchúir is along to spaeak about his RTE article highlighting that a file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions after the 2021 doping raid in Kildare. Rishi and Tom then turn attentions to the weekend and are joined by L’Homme Presse owner Andy Edwards and Sounds Russian trainer Ruth Jefferson. Plus we have our regular pointing segment in association with ThoroughBid as Ben Atkins gives us the latest.
