The original idea came from the chorus of the music. I thought of an accordion to create it, but unfortunately I couldn't find a good sound for the iPad for this instrument, so I scrapped the idea and replaced it with a soft synthesizer with some depth.

My partner in adventures, on this occasion, did the rest with an impeccable job full of creativity and elegance.

ILLUSION MACHINE (Winkandwoo & Midisound)

A cover version by Jimmy Rivas and myself of the gorgeous Led Zeppelin track, ‘The Rain Song’. Written by Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, it appeared on their 1973 album ‘Houses of the Holy’.

  I’ve always loved the song and decided earlier this year to learn how to play it and having learned it, I thought I’d attempt to record it. I wanted to make it a big production and after more time and more takes than it probably took Led Zeppelin to record the entire album, I ended up with something I thought sounded half decent so I asked Jimmy if he’d care to join me. Luckily for me he agreed and sent me an outstanding vocal track stamping his unmistakable mark on the song. Thank you Jimmy.

Hello everyone,  

One of my first songs here on SC was an instrumental lullaby. From the very beginning, I had the idea that it could be sung. It was only thanks to Haru that this became a reality. Haru Spring asked me to write lyrics in Japanese and to let her sing them in her language. I thought it was a fantastic idea. For me, the voice and language are equally instruments, and I love going on musical journeys of discovery. That’s why I rearranged the piece.  

I’m thrilled with how Haru wrote and performed the lyrics, and I feel deeply honored to have been able to work with her. Thank you so much, Haru!  

How might the song sound in other languages with different lyrics? I find the idea fascinating and invite you to arrange the song in your native language. If you’re interested, feel free to reach out to me.

Heart of the Forest

This is a song I wrote in an attempt to do a straight up old skool Soul song (in the style of Al Green, or Jacksoul's 'Still Believe In Love'). It's one of the few songs of my own where I wrote and sing the lyrics, in addition to doing all the music. 

But I also was very interested to hear how it could sound with the talents of the Eclectic Collective doing their own interpretation of the music, so after I completed this Soul version, they had at it, and in their typically innovative style, they came away with a totally new more upbeat remix version featuring some Caribbean influences. The one common thread between the two versions is the soulful guitar playing by TexMex Shaman, which seemed to fit both styles seamlessly. Thanks for listening, and hope you enjoy them!
(P.S. "Rex" in the lyrics is a sabre-toothed tiger)

Hey… Hope all is well wherever you are. Happy Winter Solstice, Holidays, or whatever you may be up to. Thanks to all those who listened to the song I briefly posted then deleted yesterday. It had to go.  So I did this jam for my friend Joe, who died 8 years ago. Never got to say goodbye. He was always down on his luck, but somehow found something to laugh about. He knew I was a musician, so he'd leave phone messages with him banging on a chair like it was a drum as he laughed his ass off. He called me Wild Man. I basically just played some loud distorted slide on this, doing my own thing… with a ton of feedback. My music often gets loud and angsty when I am working through tough stuff in my life. So this is mostly cathartic noise. I really didn’t want to sing anything as I was pretty grumpy at the time. Feel like I should redo this with more lyrics and less distortion, when I am in a better mood. Thanks for dropping by, Mark
