The play "Astoria" by Jura Soyfer is staged for the first time in Bulgaria. An unusual comedy in which the resemblance to present faces and events is completely coincidental, isn't it! Actually. . . maybe! Through his acerbic social humor, Jura Soyfer turns a real-life diplomatic lie into his bitterest anti-utopia. "Astoria" sounds dangerously topical, and the humor in the lyrics really grates at times.

"The soup" depicts a home for abandoned children and a caring director with a strict temper. When a child, who has been in the home for a while and impatiently awaits adoption, she challenges the director on a.... spelling bee. Using the letters from the soup they eat every day, the bet is either the little girl get's to bed, or the director adopts her. Who wins?

Yana Borisova's text is a touch to the subtle aspects of human relationships. The discrepancies in life and the creative hidden power of loneliness are presented with warmth and understanding. In the intimate world of man, opposites such as laughter and sadness, closeness and distance, pleasant and scary are inseparable. By travelling between these extremes, we can find the courage to be real in the performance.
