Soundscapes are all around us - in our cities, in the streets, around the next corner. Everywhere you go there is another environment of sound waiting for you to tune into. Even in the midst of the hustle and bustle of city life the subtle sounds of nature can be
heard. There are nearly always birds somewhere near by and if you listen closely you can hear them singing.

In the centre of Dublin city there is a quiet tranquil place. A place where you can go to relax, listen deeply, and marvel at the multitude of sounds that surround you. It is an
enchanting secret garden with three hundred years of stories to tell.

In this podcast ecological artist Ashleigh Downey goes on a meamble to discover some of the wonders that lie hidden behind the walls of this secret garden. With ears wide open, and with a sense of curiosity Ashleigh invites you to join her on a soundscaping jaunt to awaken your senses and immerse yourself in a sonic environment.

Podcast: The Irish Blackboards: Reflections on Joseph Beuys' 1974 Visit to Ireland
In 1974 Joseph Beuys exhibited A Secret Block for a Secret Person in Ireland  at Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin, and the Ulster Museum, Belfast. During several visits to the island that year, Beuys presented lectures and discussions in several cities. In this episode, Irish artists Maud Cotter and John Carson reflect on their experiences of having attended Joseph Beuys' blackboard lectures in Cork and Belfast while studying at the Crawford College of Art and Design and the University of Ulster, respectively. Maud Cotter joins Logan Sisley, Acting Head of Collections, Hugh Lane Gallery, in conversation, while John Carson joins longtime friend and fellow artist Sean Lynch, as they consider the effects that the mythic and monumental figure of Beuys had--and didn't have--on young artists studying across Ireland in 1974. These discussions take place in the context of the exhibition, Joseph Beuys: From the Secret Block to Rosc at Hugh Lane Gallery from July 2021 to January 2022. The exhibition reflects on Beuys’ relationship to Ireland, where he saw Irish myth, literature and landscape as sources for cultural renewal and healing, and includes three blackboards that Beuys drew on during his lecture at Hugh Lane Gallery. It also features photographs by Caroline Tisdall, who documented this event and many of Beuys’ Irish excursions. As part of the celebration of the centenary of the birth of Joseph Beuys, Goethe-Institut Ireland and Hugh Lane Gallery have collaborated on an ongoing programme of talks, screenings and events. Hugh Lane Gallery has an exceptional history centred around the ground-breaking vision of Sir Hugh Lane himself. He established the gallery in Dublin in 1908 and it is the oldest extant public gallery of modern art in Europe. 

One of the earliest collectors of Impressionism in Ireland or the U.K., part of the collection of Irish and international art Sir Hugh presented includes superb examples of paintings by Manet, Renoir, Monet, Degas and Morisot. He was also an early champion of contemporary Irish art and organised the first ever exhibition of Irish Art abroad in London, in 1904, to tremendous success. 

Since its foundation, the gallery has played a leading role in Irish cultural life. In 1977, the Gallery hosted the ROSC international exhibition and has embedded in its collections works from the series of ROSC exhibitions. Over the last century, the legacy of gifting the exceptional has significantly enhanced this great collection. This includes the Lady Lavery Memorial Bequest through Sir John Lavery 1935 which provides us with a unique visual history of the birth of Modern Ireland. More recently, in 1998, gallery director Barbara Dawson secured the donation of the studio and archive of Francis Bacon, born in Dublin in 1909, from his heir John Edwards and Brian Clarke. The gallery subsequently acquired six paintings from the artist’s Estate
In celebration of the opening of the gallery’s new wing in 2006, Dubliner Sean Scully presented the gallery with a superb collection of his work which is on display in the Sean Scully gallery.
The Gallery continues to focus on modern and contemporary art and is a lead supporter of excellence in Irish art practice.
