I love the water drip sound of the original sample - I hear it as "tapati" and used it as is as the center of the piece. Just riffed on it on GarageBand. So, not a partita but a tapatita...

SF Tapatita (disquiet0581)

A rhythmic field-recording of a downspout in Helsinki serves as the basis for this track, inspired by the Disquiet Junto Projet 0581 (details see below).

Somehow Helsinki immediately  triggered thoughts of Aki Kaurismäki and his many beautiful films. Especially https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drifting_Clouds_(film) came to mind and gave the track its title.
I hope the track does it justice. Since it was created rather technically it is a result of the versatility of randomness and the power of art.

I proceeded as follows: First, low-pass and high-pass filtered versions of the field-recording were created. Then hit-points and midi-notes were extracted from these three variants. These were assigned to different instruments.
Two variants of the field-recording created with PaulXStretch are also included.

Helsinki Rhythm [disquiet0581]

In which I willfully misinterpret a field recording of a downspout in Helsinki (see below)as a percussion accompaniment, and write the melodies for it to accompany.

When I first heard the clip, I was surprised by how regular it was rhythmically -- it sounded like a drum playing swung eighths. I started getting ideas for melodic material that the drummer could be responding to.

The next thing I did was to transcribe the rhythm. I ended up interpreting it as a 12/8 -- I was initially anticipating having to carve up the bars differently at different times, but I found I didn't have to.

I decided to interpret the instruction "the provided music is the underlying rhythm" to mean that there shouldn't be a rhythmic event without the "drum" involved. (That is, e.g. if the "drum" is playing dotted quarters, nobody else is playing faster than that, and if the drum is playing eighth notes, someone is playing eighth notes with it.) So there are faster, more contrapuntal sections, and more chorale-like sections when less is going on rhythmically.

And then there are also just a couple of places that vary from the "groove", like the lone duple, which I had to deal with a little differently, and the sort of syncopated part near the end. I had the piccolo match the rhythm in the latter case with what I think is a quote from a folk song (but I don't know what the folk song is called, or how the rest of it goes).

I put the clip into Audacity and recorded all five parts (piccolo, three C flutes, and alto flute) over it. I realized that once they were all in there, it was no longer possible to hear some of the softer "notes" of the "drum", so I made that track a little louder.

I went in a lot of different directions at first trying to figure out how to incorporate the rhythmic field recording but finally settled on using it alongside more ambient tracks. Hopefully the source audio isn't lost or too much in the background.

This was created in Ableton Live using Slate+Ash Choreographs and ThePhonoLoop Tapes.01. The sample was modulated with Max for Live Slink Devices with added effects using Valhalla Supermassive and Baby Audio Spaced Out.

Helsinki Downspout Dream [disquiet0581]

I felt inspired to have a go at this week’s Junto as I love field recordings and I am also pretty immersed in playing with rhythms at the moment. It was a natural fit and great fun.

For the process I loaded the original field recording into Ableton’s Simpler and used Split mode, one of my favourite features. I done similar on another channel with a sampled drum loop. Between the two they made a complex polyrhythm. From here I mapped up some parameters and jammed out a long take, most of which remains untouched in this piece. I then layered sub bass below using the Model D and used a sample from 2001 Space Odyssey I took from vinyl a few months ago for the primal style scream halfway through. I felt it fitting with the tribal nature of the drums.

I think the piece is quite a challenging listen but very honest. Great fun was had too :-)

Flying Tulpa - Disquiet0581 - Helsinki Downspout

This week's Disquiet Junto project is to use the rhythm of rain in a pipe as the foundation for a piece of music. I piped (hoho) the audio into three frequency bands and trigger a different synth note when each band gets over a certain volume. The lowest frequency band is the lowest synth note and so on. I'll put more on lines, link at the bottom.

This is an experimental electronica album that uses no drums whatsoever, instead opting for other methods (Percussive lead synths and/or use of noise) to create a drum-like effect. This was a deliberate artistic choice made for the sake of emulating reality; after all, there are no drums in a potato field.
