切りどおしの坂の基底から／苔色の石垣が曲がるところ
身を捻り肩越しに振り返る／暗がりから見上げている人
木に隠れた迷い家に気づく／頬に痣のような影を置いて
黒い窓が並び見下ろしてる／いつもその背中を見ていた

庭園は蔓草と虎杖に埋まり
草の中から木が噴き出して
枝扇のように空にひろがり

I ring my bell and race down the steep slope.
Through the overhanging branches, light spills in patches across the road.
At the bottom of the steep descent, I stop my bike, twist my body, and glance over my shoulder. I notice an abandoned house hidden among the trees on the high ground. Rows of black windows stare down at me.

A dull gleam of silver wheels flickered in and out among the trees.
Something swift, tracing an arc as it ran.
Where the moss-colored stone wall curved.
A person watching me from the shadows.
A shadow like a bruise fell across that person's cheek.
I always saw only his/her back.

The abandoned house's garden was buried in vines and Japanese knotweed.
A single tree grew up from the grass, its branches spreading like a fan into the sky.
I perched on one of those branches, watching the windows of the abandoned house, like eye sockets.
Below the black, eye-like windows lay a steep slope.
The sound of a mechanism, like a throat clearing, echoed, and mercury fled, weaving through the green darkness.

Josh had the idea of doing a traditional Palestinian song, as he is an avid fan of their music. He wanted to raise awareness of this music and tie it to the idea it may cease to exist as a living musical tradition sooner than later. Everyone in the band was immediately on board with this idea, and set about to make it happen.
Mark, who is an expert percussionist, composed a typical traditional Middle Eastern style drum pattern, together with an Arabic scale melody, played on the Qanun (a kind of zither). To that he added the instrumental 'Zurna' solo in the middle, various other traditional instruments, and even sang the high pitch yodel sound at the end. Josh found this pattern fascinating, and added his five string fretless bass to the it shortly after. Carl jumped in very shortly thereafter, and came up with some really amazing vocal melodies, as well as wonderfully prescient lyrics. He even learned more than several phrases in Arabic, which he sang in there, too. We were all very impressed by this, of course.
JJ was next up, adding his magical, melodic, and exotic saz, shakuhachi, and synth to the mix. Ken threw in next, adding his perfectly timed brass and Chinese percussion to the mix, too. Last, but certainly not least, Stephen recorded his subtle, exotic, traditional sitar to the piece.
Once we had it all recorded, we turned it over to Mark for a mix, as the whole thing is really his baby. Stephen mastered it, though, as he is our resident professional producer.
Our hope is that this song inspires you to dig into Palestinian music, and through that, you experience a taste of the magic and the beauty of that region, despite suffering victims of war are experiencing there. But most of all, we hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed creating it.
