This album is the culmination to the Qwerk labels first year releasing music - celebrating movement, dance, and personal expression. Let’s get weird!

MizzMegan: Artist QWERKS!

When did you start making music?
I was a choreographer for many years and edited music for stage in good ol' GarageBand, having no idea that I was building skills that would help me produce my own music in the future. After I started DJing in 2018, I got interested in Ableton but the entire music scene felt so foreign and everything was moving so fast, I just couldn't get started. When my buddy Henry Was showed me Logic, I instantly said, "woah, this is beefed up GarageBand." I realized my barrier to entry was much lower than I had thought, and got super brave. I think I made my first song in a day. I released my first Edits EP in 2020, then made the switch to Ableton when Justin and I started his first music production bootcamp. 

What makes YOU qwerky?
My love for music is only rivaled in its intensity by my interest in science. I'm currently pursuing a PhD in neuroscience, so when I'm not playing gigs or creating songs, I'm in a lab or classroom or clinic somewhere collecting and analyzing data. It makes music so satisfying because I get to turn off the analytics and just play. Music is pure expression, exploration, and fun--I don't like to think too much--yet the tedious aspects of mixing and arrangement never get monotonous. I think that's why I'm really into making breakbeat these days, I can chop vocals and breaks into a million variations. Science and the research process have taught me a lot of patience.

1. When did you start making music?
Funny connections here. I started playing music at 8 years old. I got into DJing around 12 and so I started tinkering on FL Studio at 13. Didn’t start taking it seriously until about 19 and things didn’t really click for me until about 22. I’m almost 25 now, guess time takes it’s course.

2. What makes YOU qwerky?
Probably my music taste first and foremost. I really don’t listen to dance music despite when I make it! I’m a huge jazz kinda guy, really into J-pop (Taeko Onuki, Haruomi Hosono), leftfield singer-songwriter kinda stuff (Daniel Johnston, Laurie Anderson, Brian Wilson), strangely obsessed with The Wiggles, if I kept on writing this I wouldn’t stop. Also I’m diagnosed with Asperger’s so that helps things.

3. If you were a cartoon character, who would you be?
Daffy Duck.

4. What’s your favorite sound?
Aweminus snare, ocean, my cat meowing because I don’t think he learned how to meow as a kitten and he makes crazy noises now.

5. You’re making dinner at your house… what’s on the menu?
Unfortunately at this point, Kraft mac and cheese hahahaha. Or we’re going to chipotle, some days are easier than others.

6. Who are 3 people you’d invite? (from any time period)
Curly, Larry, and Moe.
