I've been interested in this photograph for a while. The photo was taken by my father in the 1950s in North Sydney. In the foreground a dilapidated building housing the E.Tanav Bakery, in the in background the newly built modernist MLC building, the Post Office Tower, the AMP building. Who was E.Tanav, when was the bakery built, was it even still operating at the time the photo was taken? It looks run down, maybe closed, in the 1950s, but I imagine the heyday activity in the bustling bakery, the heat from the ovens, the smell of baking bread. It's possible the first deliveries from the bakery were made by horse and cart. A large building now stands where the bakery was, and among other things it houses a handicapping service for golfers. Change happens…slowly but surely.
