I recorded this song after about 6 weeks of insomnia. The night I recorded it and listened back to the raw material I slept for about 8 hours. So there might be a little sleep magic in this. Somnolence is an 8 minute deep dive, meditative, trance like. I recommend listening with headphones and closed eyes. A small journey for you as we celebrate the one day of equality on this planet. Equal day and equal night.

Sometimes the song just happens. What I’m most excited about in this song is that I experimented with an extended vocal technique towards throat singing and discovered a new voice within me. It felt like meeting someone new yet mysterious who’s been there all along, I invited this voice to haunt my throat for a little while.

I Surrender To This

The Orcadians were the indigenous inhabitants of ancient Orkney. I created this song when I was in Orkney studying with the voice teacher Kristin Linklater. She inspired me greatly to access something very deep within me; my source of voice. She wasn't a singing teacher but she was a teacher of voice in all aspects. She died on June 5, 2020 and with her passing the world lost an incredible light. But she lives through all of her students. I dedicate this song to her and to the land where she came from. 

This song is sometimes beautiful, sometimes terrifying and completely wild. It comes from a very deep place within me. It comes from my source and it reflects the wild nature of Orkney; a place that changes by the second. Orkney is home to ancient standing stones of old religions, remnants of civilisations dating back 5,000 years. The weather is harsh and magnificent, with constantly changing light, rain and wind that takes on multitudes of dimensions. This was the first place where I witnessed the aurora borealis and touched standing stones. And it was a place that brought me back to my voice, my centre and my essence. 

This improvisation was recorded on my phone and I recomposed it into this piece after Kristin's passing. There are many songs here and many voices. Wild me. Orcadians.

We lost our season.

But I hope I can still reach you. 

I cannot describe in words how much I miss you all. It shakes my soul not to have a couple of turntables and a mixer and most of all you out there in front of me. Creating little bits of history together.
